| Cough Ollie has had a cough for the past few days, it is not freequent, only about 4 times a day, and it is more like trying to cough up a hairball, than a congested cough. Any suggestions. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | How old is he and how long have you had him. Could it be kennel cough or tonsillitis.

I've had her for three weeks. She has not been around any other dogs, she was in for shots on Monday, and the vet checked her. But she wasn't coughing then. She is very playful and doesn't act sick, she doesn't eat a lot , but she never has. She efats fine if I give her cottage cheese, but I'm having a time trying to find a food that she likes. | |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali was 9 weeks old when I got her and within a few days developed the cough so i took her to the vet and she had kennel cough, they gave her antibiotics and worm medicine because she also had coccidia. She gave the kennel cough to my 8 year old pom and it took them both 3 months to get completely rid of the cough. They would cough more at night and first thing in the morning. They both acted fine. Plenty of energy. I would tak her in to get an antibiotic just to make sure it doesn't develop into pneumonia. Cali is almost 9 months old now and still getting her to eat each day is a struggle. I have tried everything. The vet told me today to try her on baby food and try and sprinkle garlic powder or chicken broth on her food to entice her. I hope she is bettre soon.

| I'm not sure this has anything to do with what your puppy is experiencing, but my daughters yorkie went to the vet Monday for a GI irritation-which he treated and sent her home. He failed to mention that a virus causing an upper respitory infection and sore throat is running ramptant. Well two days later my dashhound has a terrible cough(sounded like she was trying to cough up a hairball) scared me to death, took her to the vet--two shots/two precriptions later we go home to worry about our jack russell Sophie and the yorkie Lacey getting sick. Sweetie is much better but guess who gets up this am with the same cough --Sophie-- called vet/told me how to dispense her dose of meds.. I also ask for the dose for Lacey. I'm just waiting for her to start coughing. Would really like to pinch the vet's head off. Not really but what was he thinking not to warn his clients about this. This stuff is very contagious and is all over GA and North FL and South AL. So be careful and ask your vet if he has seen any of this at his clinic, cuz it doesn't seem like they volunteer this type of information.(if you haven't figured it out I'm Brittabug mama) |

| Thanks for the input. I'll call the vet on Monday. I was under the impression that dogs with kennel cough were really sick, and that they had to be in contact with other dogs to get it. When we had her in for shot last Monday there were no other dogs in the waiting room, and we never put her down on the floor. So I'm puzzled as to where she might have gotten it, if it is kennel cough. It didn't start till after we had her in there though, so it might have been something she picked up in there some how. Off the scale perhaps? I don't think they disinfect that between dogs. |

| Izzy B. is almost 5 months old. She has had the hairball cough almost since the day we got her. Since she is our seizure puppy she has been to at least 5 vets including several at Oklahoma State University who have all been told about the cough but none of them seem to be too concerned about it since they have listened to her chest and all is fine there. I just always run check her when I hear her cough to make sure she isn't chewing on something she shouldn't be and choking on it and if not, I just leave her be and she gets over it. She does this a few times a week but used to do it several times a day. I agree with the person who mentioned the vets not disinfecting their scales!!! Last time I had Izzy B. in some people brought their dog in and said it had been vomiting all day. They took the dog and weighed it and then someone else brought their puppy in and it went right to the same scale. I used to work in a doctor's office so I am very conscientous about germs!!! I am sure they are just as bad for our little furbabies as they are for ourselves and our children. Barbara - Emmie and Izzy B's mom

| I'm not sure if I should worry or not. there is another thred titled "kennel cough" and it sounds like thier dogs have much worse coughs than Ollie does. Maybe it is nothing. It doesn't seem to bother her. |

| My daughter took her pup to the vet with a coughing, hacking sound after she got him on sat. Diagnosed with kennel cough. Given antibiotics. My pup had been doing the same thing every 3-4 hrs. I thought maybe a cold but realized that the new pup (Gremlin) sounded the same as Gypsy. I have an appt on Tuesday, but she started it more frequently last night so I to her to the ER this morning and was also dx with kennel cough. Sd not fatal but given antibiotics and cough suppresant. Both pups act like nothing is wrong except for the coughing like a hairball thing. Vet said usu kennel cough they act pretty normal, it is when it progresses to pneumonia that they act sick.
