| yorkie or maltese I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my yorkies so much, but the only other dog I have ever had was a rott (that was perfect). So do I stick with the yorkie that I know and love or do I buy a maltese?

I have had Yorkie ssince I was 10 years old. However during the time I have been showing I myself also thought about getting a Maltese. Well I did. Loved there sweet playful personality. However I did not like the coat. VERY hard to care for keeping it white and brushing it everyday was a must! I found even kept short it was alot of work and tear staining an issue as well as yelowing on the feet. I do not have one anymore but still adore the breed. I guess it all depends on if you have the time to put into the care or not. Plus the temperments are very different than a yorkies. Yorkies think they are this HUGE dog. Maltese know they are not. Let us know what you decide... Good luck

| Thanks for your input, I was concerned about the tear stains and yellowing feet.

| You should just get a yorkie/maltese mix, hehe. That is what I did. This is when I first got him at 11 weeks and now he is almost 7 months.

| I too have a Yorkie (Muffin) and a Maltese (Biscuit). I have to agree with the coat and tear staining problem however, the Maltese is a beautiful dog with a great personality. I keep Biscuit in a very short puppy cut and I clean his eyes everyday. I don't find grooming Biscuit much different than Muffin because they both have to be brushed everyday regardless of their coats. I will say keeping a white dog clean is more of a challenge than black/tan dog but when a Maltese is clean they look so beautiful! Muffin and Biscuit get along great. I think the Maltese and Yorkie are great together. |

| I am also a yorkie lover, but love love love my maltese. They are so smart and loving. I havn't had any problems with yellowing feet at all yet. Tear staining is up and down as she is growing from a puppy to an adult but its not bad. They are such great dogs, I say everyone should have one of both

| I am a lilttle predjudice but I think yorkie adults are cuter than Maltese adults and that is why I would get anotherr yorkie. Plus I love the terrier personality.

| I have a maltese and love love love the breed!!! They do seem to pic one person that they are very loyal and attached to. They are not harder to potty train in my experience, but a little easier. Very silly and playful and laid back. Not as needy for attention as yorkies. Brushing is a daily thing of course. That's something that you have to be ok with. I love to groom my dogs, so that is not a complaint of mine. My last maltese lived to be 14 and never "yellowed" Good luck with your decision. Go look at a few maltese puppies and their parents. See what you think... |

| I love all breeds, I think you should go look at the puppies, and pick the one that steals your heart. Just be carefull, you might just pick more than one. Best of luck to you!!!!

| I have Yorkies and my Mom has Malteses. I think they are both precious dogs, but I think the Maltese require more coat care - They show dirt faster, they have tear stains, they're paws get dirty, their back ends show the littlest speck of poop, their coat tangles more, they take longer to dry after baths, they need to be brushed twice a day, their faces shows stains after eating. They do seem to be a little calmer than the Yorkies. I haven't noticed hers being one person dogs. Hers bark more than mine, but it may be just personality. I think they share a lot of the same health problems, but her's seem to get a lot of ear infections from excess hair growing. Her Malteses have been bigger than my Yorkies even when they weigh the same. |

| I am also over the top about Yorkies, however, we did get a Maltese and we are very happy we did. Our maltese, Sammie, is so laid back, very playful, never moody or sulky or pouty or demanding. He just plays, cuddles and keeps himself very happy. He interacts great with Gracie, the Princess. The two personalities mesh beautifully. Gracie is very high maintenance and Sammie is very low maintenance so it sort of evens out. We have been happy. PS, we wouldn't take a billion dollars for our yorkie.

| Nothing wrong with getting Maltese!! It would be nice to have both!! I wish I could do that. I, myself, had hard time to pick which one!!! But I am definite that I will get a yorkie instead of Maltese because I already know a fabulous breeder for yorkie and not for Maltese.

| i have a yorkie Ginger, she is 11 months and 4.5 lbs and i just bought a maltese Lacey, she is 4 months and 3 lbs. They are the best of friends. And i agree with the post that yorkies are more high maintenance, needs more attention while the maltese are more simple and laid back. this is based on my experiece |
