When to start grooming? I have a 4 month old yorkie. I bath her once a week. The hair on the hop of her head is coming in quite silver and it looks so funny because the ends are still black from the puppy hair. I was wondering, when should I bring Emmy to the groomer for her first haircut? She has a pretty thick coat and it's getting long and kinda scruffy looking. I was once told if you cut their hair too early, it prevents it from coming in so soft and shiny later? If someone could help out a new yorkie owner, I would appreciate it!! Thanks-- Ashey & Emmy

That's a good question. I think we brought Yoda in for his first haircut at around six months. Hopefully a more qualified Yorkie expert on hair can answer your question for you.

I got my puppy when he was 8 weeks old and started grooming him myself the next day. He had his first trim almost immediately - because his puppy hair was totally terrible!!!!! Carol Jean

Thin haired yorkie Hello everyone, Molly, my female yorkie has very fine, soft, thin hair, but my male Cody, finally after a year and a half has a much much better coat. He really looks cute now except where I cut the front a little short. I am letting it all grow out and see how he looks. I am so excited about his coat now. My question, should I have Molly's hair cut or just let it grow more. You can see her skin, but it has gotten better. She is adorable anyway. She is so sociable. I am afraid if I get it cut she will look bald. Can anyone help? Did anyone else go through this? I am hoping her hair will grow like Cody's did. Since his was so fine I never cut it short for the same reason, but now it looks cute. Thanks everyone. I sure enjoy reading everyone's comments. Mollymae and Cody's Mom Janet

Glad this question was posted! I've been wondering the same. At 3mths Bella's hair is super thin but kind of long and looks a bit scraggly! I want it to grow out nice (and long) but are you supposed to get an initial cute to get rid of the puppy hair?

| Mac and Mellie both went to the groomers around 4 months, if anything just to get used to the whole idea of the grooming thing.

I spoke to my local groomer about this--age to start--yesterday,as my puppy is 4 1/2 months and messy looking despite daily brushing and weekly baths. She said to start young as with most things,to get the puppy use to it.The dogs she has who fuss are those who don't start til they are older.Unfortunately she can't fit my Holly in for 2 months!

Welcome to YT!!!! I took Princess at 4 months. It's best to start them early because as the adult coat comes in, it takes a longer time to groom. They sit better for the Groomer too if you start early. Can't wait to see pictures!!!

Thin haired yorkie Hello everyone, Thanks for your replies. I give Mollymae her baths and she is really a swirmer. I don't have pictures on the computer yet. I am not sure how to put them on, but I have read where some of you helped others with instructions. As soon as I get my pictures in the PC, I will try to send them out. I have had the best time looking at your babies and reading your comments. I love yorkietalk. I have learned a lot. I adore yorkies. Like I said, my Cody Joe's hair has gotten very pretty. He has floppy ears, but he has really gotten pretty. I adore them both. Janet

I sort of think the only reason to take them to the groomer is to get them used to going to the groomer. If you want your pups hair to grow out long, stay away from groomers. 99% of the time, they screw it up. Learn to trim the ears, paws etc. yourself. not that hard. If you are going for a puppy cut then you can risk a visit to the groomer but most of them cut it more than you hope. Can't believe number of horror stories on here. Take in 4 month old black/tan Yorkie pick up a silver stranger. Do I sound pesimistic? LOL It is normal for the hair on their head to be very thin and a lot of them look bald. That means they are probably going to have a nice silky coat that you can groom yourself. Do a search on here, lots of good advice regarding how to do it...or ask Villette or Lexi's Mom.
