| Flying with a Yorkie from Newark to Paris Hi everyone. I have a lovely 4 year old Yorkie girl named Diva. This June, we are going to Paris and I want very much to take her. Since we are from Seattle, we will stop over in Newark to visit family, then fly out of there to Paris. The flight is 9 hours. That means that by the time we check in, board, get off the plane in Paris, go thru customs, she would be holding her wee wee for at least 12 hours! How do I do this? Is there anyone who has taught a dog to relieve their dogs on pee pads in the rest room of an airplane? If she is in her purse bag and has to pee, will she be smart enough to releve herself or will she hold it until she bursts? She is afterall in a bag she calls her bed, and most smart dogs dont pee in their beds. What do I do? I am very concerned. Thank you, Angel |

| Vivi has flown on several flights but never that long. She is trained to pee pads and will use one in the airport bathroom before we leave. I believe she would use the bathroom on the plane if she really needed to go. I suggest that you do some trial bathroom stops around your home and get her use to peeing in unfamiliar places. If she needs to go bad enough she should go on the pad in the plane bathroom. They are really gross so take enough pads to cover the floor.

| If she is wee wee pad trained I'm sure she will use it in the rest room if she has to go bad enough. Good luck and welcome to YT...

| Thanks so much, its really sad that you cant take a dog to pee in airports, especailly when there is a layover. Often I have to take my dog outside the airport and go thru security again. Often I almost miss my connecting flight. Its pretty stressful. |

| You really need to work on the wee wee pad training...I don't have to leave the airport..I take her into the ladies' room. It makes travelling with your dog a lot easier. Good Luck

| I always take a wee pad that is already used and put it on the tiny floor in the plane's 'restroom.' I put it in a zip lock bag in my purse. It's the most valuable article in my purse. I never had a dog that would pee in it's carrier. I had a Japinese Chin years ago that would hold pee in for more then 12 hours. We sat through a tornado in an airport and finally arrived at our destination 18 hours later. He refused to pee until I put his used wee pad down in the hotel bathroom floor. The airport restroom, as well as the plane's wasn't up to his standard. Paris is a great place to travel with a dog. Also, only bottled water while traveling with Diva. Jessica |

| Did your girl always go on pee pads? Diva never has and she is nearly 5. Is it too late to start? Do I start in the house or take the pad outside? Ugh, this is all new to me. How did you insert a photo to the left of your posts? Angel |

| Welcome fellow Washingtonian! Yes, the pee pad idea is very good, you can start training her with a pee pad inside or outside your house, whatever is most convenient for you. It's never too late, Yorkies are very smart little creatures. Good luck! | Welcome to YT!! I fly often with Toto and she is trained to the wee wee pad. Although I always choose flights for minimum hours, there are usually delays .... once she went about 18 hrs. without peeing & I was mortified!! Even though I take her to the bathroom, there are so many distractions, it's hard to get her to go. My greatest success was ... while waiting in Denver, one of the ladies at the desk was an animal lover and she told me to take her to a door that was right next to our boarding gate. Went in there and it was a "private" bathroom with a changing table, etc.! It was heaven! No distractions, plenty of room and clean ... practically as soon as I took Toto out of her carrier & got a pad down on the floor ... she lept onto it and peed AND pooped!! I have found, at least for us, the more private an area you can find works best. I always travel with plenty of pads, wipes, Special K [stored in a plastic container so it doesn't get smashed], bottled water, etc. Also, when we fly on the 16th, I am going to try the new diapers for her to wear while in the carrier, "just in case"! I found them at PetSmart and they are made by Simple Solutions .... they have the velcro type tabs so you can take them off and refasten them! Good luck!!

| When I came to Germany, I got a little bigger crake for my bunny (cant have them on the plane with you when you go over water) and stick a wee wee pad in the crate. And as SOON as I picked her up and got her out side I let her out to go potty. OH BTW make sure you have her chipped with the right chip. I dont remember what its call but its the one you have to get when you travel over seas. I dont know how Paris dose it, but in Germany we had to send heath papers before we could go and wait till we got the papers back, saying if it was ok or not for her to come. Also make sure you have food and water out the out side of the crate. They will feed and water them for you.. Well I now AA did with Bunny... I have hear there is a lot of dog friendly place there. Germany has then EVERY WHERE. I can bring my Bunny into Micky d's when I go. Which I think is cool. Here If they dont have a sticker saying no dogs then you can bring them in.Hope you have fun on you trip this Summer!! |

| Hi Toto's Mom, Thanks for all that information.I cant believe she held it for 18 hours! I get so stressed knowing that the poor thing is uncomfortable and I know she wont go in her travel bag. The question is; How do I train a 4 year old Yorkie to pee on pads? I tried so today, put the pad out on the grass to start and she looked at me like I was nuts. |

| I use to travel all the time..... I use to travel with my first yorkie KiKi. She was trained on the weewee pad so when we fly.... I would take her to the bathroom.... put the pad on the floor and I wouls sit on the toilet seat with my legs up. Since she was use to it.... she'd go right away and I would let her stay there and stretch her legs! I sometimes sit in the can for half an hour..... if nobody knocks. You are not allowed to take her out of the bag but she was os good she would hide under my blanket.... and I always took the window seat so the ladies didn't see her. The french are great with dogs..... bringing your yorkie there will be wonderful! It's quite easy.... only need to get health papers! Good Luck! |

| love the weewee pads... All my dogs are trained on pads because the winters are way tooooo cold. And I love the pads but wanna hear something funny? I would go shopping with my MaeMae ..... to an outlet... and I would have to bring food, water, treats and weewee pad. She refuses to go on the sidewalk.......she will hold it in and I realized this and I took the weewee pad out and laid it on the sidewalk, she'll go. Now I know that is silly but it makes it easier to take her to people's houses and places and to fly......I never have to worry about her. Just more to carry! |

| Hi JudyMae, Yes, I've traveled with Diva many times, but never to Europe. My question is how to get her to pee in the toilet. She is so panicked on the plane. Hates the high frequency sounds, shakes and pants. Hope she will go in the rest room, hope by June she will know what the heck a wee pad is. Angel |
