Possible service dog? Riley has always been pretty in-tune with the sounds of our house and he's been showing some interesting behavior regarding those sounds. At first I thought it was just a coincidence but once I started to pay a alittle more attention to it I realized he's pretty consistant. When the microwave goes off he comes to me, scratches my leg, barks and then goes to the kitchen and sits in front of the microwave...he does the same thing with the coffee pot beeps in the morning. Like most dogs he always lets me know when someone is at the door or near the house but he comes to alert me first and then goes to whatever is going on. He's only a little over 9 months old and I haven't taught him to do this...and to my knowledge he didn't come from a home with a service dog so he's not copying anyone. How do I encourage this or teach him more? Is there a group or club that trains for this type of service? I kind of like it actually...I lost some of my hearing in a car accident a couple years ago and even though I do hear the microwave go off it's nice that he alerts me.

I would check into the Service Dog deal. How wonderful it would be if you could have your little Riley trained as a bonified Service Dog. Then he could go anywhere and everywhere with you, no questions asked..... Go For It!

Where in the Southeast do you live? I would go on line and do a search for "hearing-ear" dogs. I am sure you should be able to find some organizations that do training. I did a quick search and found the following website. There are a bunch of them but this one seemed really interesting: http://www.hardofhearingchildren.com...g_ear_dogs.htm good luck..... please keep me posted, I am losing my hearing, slowly but surely and if all goes well with you (I'll let you be the first), then I might give it a whirl.

Thank you chattiesmom. Right now we're in Florida but we're heading back to Illinois in a month or two. I'll check out the link you gave me and I'll do a search for Illinois too. I hope I can find some help to train him...it would be a shame to not encourage his natural ability for this.

If you want it bad enough, you can do it! Please give the little guy a chance. Do NOT get discouraged and DO NOT let anyone tell you that it cannot be done. If your furkid has the heart and mind to be your ears, then you OWE him the chance. Sorry, that was a little passionate.
