| What to look for re: male stud Hi! I live in Canada and I'm new to yorkietalk.com. I have a 1 1/2 year old female yorkie (Kira) and a 6 month old male (Tiko). I was planning to breed Kira during her next heat (May), but after reading some of the postings, it looks like Tiko might be too young to use in May. I will have to look for a male yorkie stud in my area. Is there anything I should look for...avoid (I'm feeling overly cautious after a really bad purchase experience I had with a Yorkie breeder in Oklahoma). Thanks. |

| You will never know until the time comes. However, before you breed them make sure to check with the regisary to see if they have age guidelines for your dog. I think that if your dog is AKC the male has to be a certain age to registar his pups. Petie breed Madie and he was only 7 mo. old. However Madie is registared APR and they don't have a guide line on the dogs age. They realize that sometimes no matter what you do pups happen.

| okay, I went to akc.org to find out the guidelines. Males need to be between 7 mo and 12 years old to registar the pups. Females 8 mo to 12 yr. I'm not sure about all the other registaries except APR. Good luck

| Thanks for your replies. I have collected a few names of yorkie breeders. It also looks like I could register Tiko's puppies (he would be 8 months). However I have read several postings where they state that yorkie sperm may not be mature until one year of age. I teach and have the summer off (since my female will go into heat in May, I would be able to look after the puppies in the summer) so I'm worried that if I just let my female mate with Tiko she may not get pregnant - thus looking for another older stud that has been successful breeding. Do I look for a smaller male (my female is 5 lbs.). Any questions I should ask the breeder -- I'm new at this. Thanks. |

| Your male should always be smaller than your female and since Tiko won't be full grown, you won't know if he is going to be bigger then your female. If the male is bigger and she has big pups, she might have to have a C-section or worst case is that she might die giving birth because the puppies might be too big. I've seen this happen before to some people that weren't familiar with breeding and they just wanted puppies of their own, it was a very sad day for the mom and the pups. Please consult some experienced people who breed, they can take you through the process step by step, how to mate, how to care for the mom and when it's time to have the pups. When the pups are born, they need extra care and attention. Good luck!!

| Look for perfection! A male that will complement your female! Smaller is best.
