| Nervous about tomorrow's shots - any advice? Buddy's going for shots tomorrow - distemper (with parvo?) and rabies. The vet told us to wait a little extra time bc of the kennel cough...so Buddy's 15 wks (2.11 lbs). When my kids were infants, I went through hell trying to handle the vaccinations. DH came to most appts & I insisted no more than 2 vac. at a time. My dd ended up with an adverse rxn to DPT & it was so scary. Now I'm freaking about the dog's shots and the stress is a bit much (will probably need my Xanax ) I do hope everything goes well but my thoughts get so ahead of themselves...fears of reactions, concern the vet isn't open all day tomorrow or on Sunday, just an emergency clinic - will the dog get sick and on a family b-day wknd? etc, etc, etc*sigh*. Anyway, I want to be more positive about all this but anxiety has the upper hand right now. Any words of encouragement or advice on making this easier on Buddy (and me) would be most appreciated. Thanks so much. Cheryl |

| Try not to worry. Most dogs do just fine with the shots. The only one that one of my dogs had a reaction to was the kennel cough(bordatello). She was better by the next day though.

| If they have a reaction to the shot it usually happens instantly. So if you're worried hang around the vet's office for half an hour or so. When I give my puppies their first vacs, I make sure my vet is open and available. So if one has a reaction I can rush it to my vet. Second and third shots are the same so if they did'nt have a reaction to the first one they are not likely to have a reaction to the rest of the series.

| I would wait for 2 weeks to get the rabies shot. I am always scared to death to have all that serum in them at the same time..no corona or lepto either. I know everyone has their own opinion and vets do what they want, but I am adamant about that.. |

| Well, I didn't have any trouble with my girl but I will do it differently if I get another pup. I also will not get Bordetella in the nose. My girl had a very black nose until about 9 months old and now she has a pink spot and I found out Bordatella vacine can bleach out their nose? Good luck and remember everyday dogs are getting vaccinated. I agree with Whisper's Mom. |

I agree. No matter what size these dogs are they are too small to have two vaccines in one day. Plus they give the same dose of the Rabies vaccine to all dogs, no matter the size. | |

| If at all possible, do not be in the same room as your pup when the doc is giving the shots. We learned the hard way.... |

| Thanks everyone...an update Sorry for the delay, been offline. I really appreciated the info in your replies. Buddy did well, just a bit tired that day. The vet only gave the rabies vaccination - not sure if their policy is to space them out or not, but the next shot will be in 2 weeks, which is what we had planned after reading the comments . Thanks again! |

| Sounds like you have found yourself a good vet. It is in the best interest of the dog to give only the rabies shot by itself and wait 2 weeks before giving the other shots. I have a dog and she cannot be vaccinated because the reaction she has I could loose her. The reaction does not always happen within half an hour after vaccine. In my dog's case it happens 3 hours after she is vaccinated. Also she was fine receiving vaccines for the first few years of her life and then it hit all of a sudden. I would never want anyone to experience what we went thru with this dog. |

| Vaccinations I ALWAYS give my puppies and adults Benadryl (1 mg per pound) before I give them their vaccinations or have my vet give them! I honestly have never had a puppy with a reaction since doing this, except for my Lupae's rabies vaccination.. If your puppy does have a reaction your vet will give them Benadryl also.. So I would rather give the Benadryl to them before the vaccination to stop a allergic reaction before it even happens! |

| Glad everything went well!!! If you get the bordatello vaccine, consider getting the shot instead of the inhaled version. My collie had a nose hemorrhage from the inhaled bordatello and it was AWFUL! I had to take him to the vet in the middle of the night to stop the bleeding. I'll never permit the inhaled bordatello to be given to my dogs again! Julie |

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Hi I will always stress regarding vaccine, because my daughter had a severe reaction to the dpt. Abbie's due her 3rd in the series, next week; but, I'll tell ya....I left the vet I've been with for 11years, because of her cavalier attitude toward this whole thing. AND (a biggie) she did NOT inform me that the lepto could be excluded! I do NOT want my dogs to have anymore stuff in their systems than is absolutely necessary, and their vet should respect that.
