| How do I handle people that are against breeding I am not sure if I would be considered a breeder yet. I only have two yorkies that have been bred (but I have bred a couple dogs in the past a GSD and APBT) but anyway I want to be one. But my question is how do you handle people that criticize what you do. They make me feel like i've went and killed someone sometimes. I'm proud of all of my animals and I"m proud of my new puppies so I don't understand why so many people that own pets make breeders out to sound like we are dirt beneath their feet. How do they think they got their pets? It is upsetting to me. I do have a love for all animals my kids and I have donated hours days weeks and months fostering and helping at animal shelters. And it's not cheap doing that because when we go to an animal shelter we have to walk in sanitized and walk out sanitized to make sure we bring nothing home to our animals. We had to buy special clothes and shoes to wear there and everything. We also have fostered animals out of our own pockets. That means each animal had to be tested for everything under the sun to make sure it had nothing it could bring to my home. Plus food toys ect. that was all out of our pockets. At this moment right here I am fostering 4 german shepherd mixed breed puppies. Their total care has all been out of my pocket. So yes I breed but I also advocate for unwanted animals as well. If we didn't breed what would happen to all of the purebred animals in the world. |

| Tashasmom -- you cannot control the thoughts or words of anyone other than yourself so learn to just ignore mean thoughtless words from others. Everyone had to start somewhere, basically we all went from knowing nothing to where we are now. You cannot let the carelesls/thoughtless words of others discourage you. My best advice to you is to do your very best. Learn all you can. Be sure that the animals you are breeding are of breeding quality. Try to find someone who will mentor you and then glean all the information from that person you can. |

| TashasMom - I hope most of us don't bash breeders. I really don't think we do. I think our criticisms are more toward people who really don't know what they are doing - and want to breed their cute little dogs - so that their "children can enjoy the experience," or because "My dog is so cute that I want more just like her," etc. etc. etc. I think your work with animals is to be greatly admired. You have obviously had some experience breeding and appear to be wanting to do it for the right reasons. I can't imagine why people would criticize you. But - if they do - just turn the other cheek - get a little thicker skinned - and don't pay any attention to them. I don't know what else you can do. You certainly don't need to justify yourself and your breeding to anyone.....as long as you are doing it the right way for the right reasons. Good luck!!! Carol Jean |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Wow...I have the opposite experience with people...but then I'm NOT a breeder. I've had quite a few friends ask me why I DON'T breed...they don't understand my reasons not breeding my girls ....or why don't I get another yorkie and breed her for puppies.... I think people all have differing opinions on Breeding and you're right - without you breeders....we would really be in a tough spot and Pet Stores would be everywhere you look. |

| You Guys Are Great It's not from people that know me or i know them. I decided today to go into a pet chat. I love talking about my animals. And as soon as I mentioned that my tasha just had puppies I felt like an atomic bomb went off in the room. It blew me away. I agree you all are so right. I know I'm doing this the right way. I also know my animals are all taken care of right. Thank you all so much for helping me on this. I know realize that you are right I can't change the thoughts of some people. I know that anyone that sees all of my girls (all of my animals are females except my two horses) they fall in love with them and know they are loved and taken care of. I also know by the quality of my pups I have been taught right. But I also know I will never stop learning because Iwill never stop searching and looking for ways to improve. I am so glad I came to this site. There is alot of knowledgeable people on here breeders and owners of dogs..Thank you. Christy |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I read over your threads and didn't see anything that would cause someone to bash you. I'm sorry that it happened but hold your chin up. It'll get better.

| Tasha you are right, this forum is fantastic. Most of the folks here are more than willing to share their knowledge and encourage folks who are trying to "break into the breeding business" -- as long as they are trying to do things right with the best interests of their dog and Yorkies in general at the forefront of their program. It is a wonderful thing to know that we have such a vast support network. |

| I do think some of the pet forums are a little rough at times. I know there are several hot topics -- where people will jump right in and often question your motives, etc. It is all well meaning - but it certainly can be intimidating, and often you have a lot of people telling you what to do or criticising you before they even know all the facts. I have seen this happen so many times!!!! This time - I think you really explained yourself well from the get-go. You certainly had my support from your initial post. I belong to a bird forum that is the worst yet. If you mention that your bird kisses you near your mouth - 30 people jump right on to tell you that your saliva is very dangerous for a bird and if you don't stop it - your bird is going to die, die, die!!!!! If you think we're bad with our Yorkies - you ought to visit this bird forum. If you say that you have been letting your bird kiss you on the mouth for years - they'll say "You've just been lucky. If you do it again tomorrow - he'll die!" Whatever - sometimes we need to just settle down (me too) and give people a break! Right? Carol Jean |

I will say this this is the first place that I have felt I can come to for help and not be turned away with a "you shouldn't breed" I know I can come here and get help and that is a good feeling..I have a mentor but sometimes I feel like i drive her slap crazy so it's nice to come here to get some answers so I'm not always bugging her.. |

| I thought you meant people on the street or in stores or such. If someone says in a disparaging way "Oh, you BREED????" You say---"I'm not married". They say "I meant dogs (or Yorkies if they know the breed)". You say with a very serious face "Shore. howdjathink puppies get here? A crow laid them on a stump and the sun hatched them?" Smile sweetly and walk away knowing you have done your very best.. |
