Default Kelsey's getting spayed...any last minute suggestions?

Kelsey will be getting spayed on Thursday. She will be staying overnight and I will be able to pick her up first thing on Friday morning. She is a licker so I'm afraid she'll open her wound. I saw at Petco they have this inflatable like neck thing to put around her neck to prevent licking etc. and it looks more comfortable than the cone thing they offer. Has anyone used this?

Also, I'm scared of the surgery. Please re-assure me and tell me everything's going to be ok! My poor baby will be away from me for a night and Im terrified for her. Im getting blood work done before the surgery this is what your supossed to do right? Please tell me what I need to look out for, do etc.

Thanks in advance.

Pippa was spayed 2 weeks ago.
The vet gave me(well he didnt give it to me he sold it to me) a rounded head collar but she couldn't use it because it was too heavy on her neck and she couldn't lift her head up.
So i made her a little Apron type thing out of broderie anglaise so it had holes in to let her scar breath.
Just get small rectangle size piece and put ribbon on 2 sides and sew it in.
The material goes across her tummy and the ribbon ties up so the bow of it is on her back.

Thats great that you are getting bloodwork done first. My vet didnt do that. Jewels had a prespay Vet appointment though. Try not to worry. Kelsy will do just fine. Jewels was a little disoriented the night we brought her home but was back to normal by the next day. You might see if your vet will give her some pain meds to take home with you. Some vets give it some dont.

Pixie didn't touch her stiches, I was pretty lucky....

I've heard that instead of the E-collar you can put an infant onesie on them and it'll keep them from getting at the stiches. You could try that if she starts bothering them....

Do you think i would be able to take her home in the same night? Or do you reccommend i let her stay overnight?

Thats really up to your vet. Some send them home that night some keep them overnight. Both of mine came home that night. I really dont see why they need to stay overnight if someone is not tthere with them but you can ask and see.

Hi...good luck !! You asked....and I'll offer my 2 cents....I would rather pick mine up the same day than have them all alone overnight....and ask your vet for pain medication - many vets don't send you home with any unless you request it. We didn't need the collar and Cheri just went thru the surgery and hardly paid attention to her incision

Your baby should be fine but ask any questions you may have to your vet also...that's what they're there for...Hope all goes well ~~

The vet that did both lil bear and moose's spays required them to stay overnight but they got phone calls from me pleanty. Just keep yourself busy and it will be done before you know it.

Moose and Lil Bear both tell kelsey not to worry and get plenty of attention and love and presents from mommy.

Well, I haven't had this done, but I know the first time the vet wanted to keep Mojo over night, I asked all sorts of questions and asked about people being there to check on him, etc. When the vet said that no one would be there until the next morning, I told him that I would prefer to have Mojo at home, where he will be comfortable and with people (which is what they need when they are not well - instead of being uncomfortable and alone). The vet didn't mind and knew that I would be the type of person who would make sure all was alright.....I keep a log of everything!! Hee,hee

Anyways, you can always ask your vet about bringing her home that night.....most will not mind and if you give her reasons why....there shouldn't be a problem there.

Regarding pain pills.....I know most vets seem to "hate" to give those out....I know Mojo had some and the vet stressed numerous times that it was very important to only give when absolutely needed....and even then, I think it was half a pill or something. So, even if they could give you one pill that can be halved or some liquid or something.....that would be good. - You never know when you might need it.

Good luck!

I will be asking the vet if she can come home that evening. I will be dropping her off before work (8am) and then checking up on her after work around 5:30 or so. And I will call the vet tomorrow and ask a bunch of questions I have. About how long does it take for a dog to recover from a spay/neuter?

Well no jumping or yorkie-poo craziness till the stitches are out, that what I was told, but by the 3 day after the spay it was all i could do to keep moose calm. Moose also decided to start pulling out her stitches, I bought her one of those e-collars looked very sad. I wish I would have known what some of the yt people have done before hand. I have read that you should get a onesie and cut a hole for her tail then that way the stitches are covered.

Hopefully kelsey will be more like lil bear, she tried to get as much sympathy as she could for the longest amount of time. She didn't start "feeling better" till the stitches came out and the vet said she should go get a treat at petsmart!!!

Aww thanks! Yeah kelsey is a crazy little thing..always playing and full of energy it'll be sad to see her almost lifeless and laying aorund after the surgery. But i know this is for the best. I know Kelsey will try to pull at her stitches..i just know how she is. She is always licking her area down there and is very in tune with her body...lol So we'll have to wait and see. I already have some onsies from when she had her first heat so I will be abelt use them after her surgery. I think it'd be better than that aweful collar.

Thanks Envrobear!

She will do great!!! I would take something of hers, like a blanket or stuff animal to comfort her while she is up there....we did for our girls and it defintely made us feel more comfortable!! Also I would check to see what time the vet does the spaying, if it is late in the day that is probably why he wants them to stay overnight to watch them....that is what our vet does, so we found another vet that would allow us to bring them home the same day!!

Also for covering up stiches, we bought some baby oneies and put those on the girls...it makes them more than the neck collar!

Kelsey will do great....we are thinking about her!!
