Bladder Stones Hi! My dog, also named Max had bladder stones twice and has had surgery to remove them both times. He is prone to the calcium oxalate stones which diet did not dissolve them, he is on a special diet now to hopefully keep them from forming again. His symptoms were frequent urination, bladder infections, then stone in uretha. The stones were found by x-ray and he got along fine with surgery. Some yorkies are prone to stones, others have no problems. I would definitely make sure your vet stays on top of this. The antibiotics got rid of infection, but he kept getting them again and again so the stones were removed. He recovered quickly. I have heard the struvite stones can possibly be dissolved, but I don't think there is a way of knowing which kind he has until the stones are removed and sent to a lab. He hasn't had a reoccurance since being on a different diet. Hope this helps. Jackie

My yorkie had three bladder stones removed surgically this past Oct. They were calcium oxalate stones and this type of stone cannot be dissolved. They must be removed surgically. Struvite stones can sometimes be dissolved. The only way to find out what kind of stones they are is to have them removed and sent off. They are very painful and if your little one has 11, you might want to consider surgery. He must be in pain. The stones press against the bladder wall. Also, if the stones move into the urethra, he will not be able to urinate, then emergency surgery will have to be performed. Good luck!!

Maxlover- what kind of food is Max on for stone prevention? How quick did his stones reoccur the 2nd time around? My yorkie is on Hill's Diet UD, but he is allergic to it and I'm currently trying to find another food for him. Thanks for your help.

| Ask your vet if you can mix some chicken broth in the rx food. Maybe that might help to make it taste better. I'm so sorry I hope Max feels better soon.

Yorkie 2, Max is on Hills Prescription Diet KD which he was put on after his last surgery as shortly thereafter, he got very sick and was in the hospital a week on IV therapy with kidney problems. Before that, he had stones again in about 8 months. It has been almost a year since his last surgery, and so far no problems. He is also on a potassium supplement I add to his food. He is a very lucky dog as he was very sick. I enjoy each day with him as he gives me unconditional love! Jackie
