| New Puppy Ok I need some advice does anyone have any input on what you can do with these babies if you work. I don't want to sound ugly or anything but a lot of people say you should not leave a puppy alone for too long. Well my problem is I have to work and I don't want her to be sad with out me. What should I do. |

| Leave her enough stuff to entertain herself... toys, chew sticks that can't get stuck in her throat... I guess you could leave a radio or the TV on if you really think she is lonely. I really don't think you are the only one that works and has a puppy. I really can't relate because I got my first yorkie 6 years ago and I worked from home.... so my little one would just wait at the bottom of the stairs until I shut my computer off for the day.... he knew the sound.... I could pass him throughout the day... but he knew it wasn't play time until the computer was shut off... (smart guy... and he never climbed the stairs). After my first, each additional yorkie always had a playmate... so they were never alone. Don't worry, I am sure your little one will adjust to your schedule.

| Welcome to YT!!!!! Set up a place for her to play with enough room. Make sure everything is safe, as they do love to get into everything. The expens work great! May be a puppy sitter? You can always get a playmate,to play with I'm sure she will be fine, lots of people work, just make sure she can't get into anything that can hurt her Good Luck!! We would love to see pictures!

| Hi Khristy and welcome to YT! Tell us a little about your Yorkie baby .... age, name, etc. Just because you work absolutely does not mean you shouldn't have a pet! There is a ton of good information here about what you can do if you must leave the puppy alone. How many hours a day will he/she be alone? Do you have someone who could possibly look in periodically while you are away? Most important are the safety issues. Do you have an area where the puppy can be confined so as not to be injured when left alone. Give us a little information and we will try to help you with all the advice we can gather! Don't feel guilty .... lots of puppy owners work and cannot be with the baby 24/7! [BTW ... where do you live in Alabama? We have a home there! ]

| Well a little info on my new baby. I do not have her yet. I keep saying her because I think I want a little girl. My mother has the mother to the babies, little mom's name is Reesy she was a birthday present to me a few years ago. Unfortunatly I was working so much that I could not be home with her a lot and she was such an active little thing. It just wasn't fair to her to have to be home alone all the time. So i let my Mom take her because she doesn't work and is home all day. I just felt it was the thing to do at the time. Well now she has had her first babies and I am not working like I was then, and very recently engaged so I will have somone there to help me with my new baby. Reesy (the mom) just had the babies this morning so it will be a while until I can bring her home. I just want to do everything I can to make sure that she is happy with us. I do remember when Reesy was a baby I had the hardest time house breaking her. I would make a huge production about going outside I thought she would eventually want to go potty out there. I mean I did treats and all. She just really wanted to go out and play and then go potty in my very small house. Just had a really hard time with it. I want to do better with it this time. Any advice you can give is much appreciated. Oh we live in Mobile, AL. |

| OK ... plenty of time to plan! There's already been some great suggestions made ... we are fortunate that I can be with Toto 24/7 ... but on those occasions that we have to leave her for a little while, we use an X-pen. You can make plenty of room in it for a little bed, toys, wee wee pad in a holder and water ... we never, ever leave food nor edible chews if we aren't home! While she is a puppy, we had to feed her little meals about 3-4 times a day, so this might present a problem for you unless you have someone to maybe give her a little food during the day. We do leave things for her to chew on in case she wants to chew, just nothing that she can get a piece off and choke! We also never, ever leave a collar, harness or anything like that on her. And, we always, always leave Animal Planet on for her! Actually, leaving the TV or music playing helps to kinda distract from outside noises [we live in the city] and she stays calm and usually just naps while we are gone! I'm sure there is a bzillion things that can be done, but I can't think of any more right now, hope this helps!

| Khristy -- Millions of people work and leave their dogs at home. I worked hard and did several things to avoid leaving my puppy alone for long periods of time when he was just a little puppy. I stayed home the first week - had neighbors drop in, had my sister take him a few days, etc. But the time has come -- and I work 6 to 7 hours four days a week and have to leave my little guy confined to the kitchen (with everything he needs). This is just the way it has to be. He doesn't cry when I leave - and he's always happy to see me when I get home. I can tell that he eats and pees and poops and plays when I'm gone. I leave the radio on for him and a light. I do have another dog in the house - but only the pup is confined to the kitchen....and I'm not sure they pay much attention to one another when I'm gone. So - just do the best you can... love your little guy a lot when you're home. Have him in an area where he is as comfortable as you can make him when you're gone. He won't be a puppy for long -- and remember dogs do sleep the better part of the day away anyway. Mine do this even when I'm home. (Mine are both asleep right now.) I'm sure he'll be fine. We have to work - it's the American way! Carol Jean |

| I am so glad I found this place you all have been so nice to me!! And I can't waite to go and see my baby this afternoon. I will try to get some good pics of the babies so I can show you all!!! Reesy is so cute I am sure her puppies will be just as adorable as she was when she was a baby!! We just bought our first house and we have a nice yard and plenty of room for the new baby when we get to bring her home!! I can't waite!!!!!!! I will be keeping in touch and anyone have any pointers you think may help us please let me know. I want to learn from all mistakes!!!!! I know that will help!!! I will say this I hope this puppy's potty training goes better than Reesy's, she was not easy!!!!!!! I have never used the pads they just seem like they would be really smelly to me!!! I have done crate training and that works well with bigger dogs, but Reesy didnt seem to care if she had to stay in tee and poo. I even put a box in her crate with her so she would not have room to get away from it and she still didnt care. She was like I gotta go and I don't care where I do it!! Looking back I can't believe she is 100% now!! My mom has done wonders for her!! |
