| Yorkie question Hi everyone! What a wonderful forum. I'm new here, so please don't scold me. I just got a yorkie on Saturday! My mom has a yorkie too, but she lives in another county so I only get the chance to speak to her on weekends. I named my yorkie Kiwi -- she is 3 months old and 2.2 pounds (but she is somewhat skinny). The earliest date I could schedule an appointment with the vet is Friday. She has only had her FIRST series of shots (yes, I know). I could not refuse her at the seller/breeder though. I think she might even come from a puppy mill in Europe because she has a European microchip. But again, I could absolutely NOT refuse her. She is very scared. She is OK in my presance, but soon as I leave she will start crying and shaking. I don't leave for long, 2 hours at most. Kiwi refuses to eat her puppy food (Purina Benefil Healthy Grow for Puppies). I now understand this is not the best brand. She loves real rice & chicken though. She is also sleepy. She sleeps most the day, God Forbid she has Hypoglycemia the poor thing. Would you recommend giving her some syrup? Thanks |

| Hello and welcome. She may have to start all her shots all over again because I am pretty certain they have to be given in unison for it to be effective. My vetdoesnt count the breeder shots so my dogs had to have them over again too so no big deal. The food you are feeding isnt one of the best foods. Some of the better brands are Chicken Soup, Canidae, Innova, Nutro, Natural Balance, and California Natural. Pups sleep alot so I dont think she needs syrup but having some nutrical on hand would be good. You can get it at Petsmart.

| HI Welcome!! I would also suggest to feed her nutrical twice a day. My pup is 4 months and I still feed him nutrical. As for food, I feed my Zoe Wellness puppy 5 mix. I've had no problems so far and its good for pups. You should look into it.

| You can also add a teaspoon of cottage cheese to the food. She is a little cutie. Welcome. |

| Thank you all! You are so kind. I actually did pick up some Nutrical (thank god!) and I fed her some right now. She loves it!! Should I feed her this twice a day ALONGSIDE with 2 meals? I will be sure to head to PetSmart today again. I will look into your advice for brands of food, this girl is pickypicky! Do any of your yorkies have a personal favorite food? I will try buying 2 or 3 food types and interchanging them during the week so she doesn't get tired of one food. Thanks for the warm responses |

| I feed my dogs Chicken Soup and a 1/2 tin each of Lil Caesars each day. My dogs arent crazy about the chicken Soup so I am switching to Innova because I have heard good things about it. You probably wont find any of those foods at Petsmart. You have to go to a specialty pet store like Pets Supplie Plus to find it. Therre is an all natural brand there but I cant remember the name of it. A food that Petsmart does carry thats not one of the best foods but it isnt a bad one either is Royal Canin. If you have problems getting her to eat the hard you could also offer a moist but if you can get her to eat the hard that is the best.

Hi Dean29 and welcome to YT im glad you found us! There are many nice people on this board that can offer you great advice. Did you buy your puppy in Europe? Try not to switch to different foods as that can cause her tummy to get upset, get a good brand puppy kibble, you can add a bit of boiled water and let it cool down, then slowly get her used to eating her dry kibble.

| Hi. I feed my puppies IAMS puppy. I add a little (very little) bit of canned IAMS puppy to get them to want it. Works every time. If you change the food, do it slowly by mixing in a little more weekly. |

| Welcome to YT. You came to the right place to get advice from experienced Yorkie owners and breeders. My Zoe is a pretty picky eater. I feed Innova Puppy canned in the morning (if it's been in the refrigerator, I heat is for 5 seconds in the microwave) and free feed (leave it down all day) the Innova Puppy dry kibble. She also likes the Innova Health Bars for treats. I buy the small ones and break them in half. The dry food and health bars can be bagged and frozen to keep it fresh. I also use Honey Nut Cheerios for training treats. She'll do about anything for a Cheerio. Once in a while I give her a bite of cheese for a snack. Nutrical is good, but don't overdo it. Just give her a little bit once or twice a day. My vet does not recommend it at all, but most folks here think it is good to use, and I do use a little once in a while. Zoe is tiny, but very healthy and energetic on this diet. Innova is not widely sold, so before your drive around trying to find it, I suggest you search for their website. It's on a thread somewhere on YT but can probably Google Innova and find it. I am fortunate that a feed store in our town sells it. They say it has become very popular, lots of folks are coming in asking for it. Wishing you many years of joy from your new baby!!!!! |

| just wanted to welcome you to YT and wish you the best of luck with your new baby- i know in the beginning it seems like you dont know what your doing, but trust me, you learn as you go so basically pull up a chair, plop that puppy in your lap and stick around and use the Search option whenever you have a question and VOILA! a plethora of answers, opinions, and advice are at your disposal.

| Snickers only had one shot when i got him but he got another one that week and then another a month later. We got him at 11 weeks....as far as the scared part goes-- i would just keep up with socializing her to everything....vacums, people, noise-- everything! That's what my breeder did....its also nature vs nurture...some dogs are more skiddish no matter what you do.....you can just slowly keep it up the good work. Its like people...my two kids are completely opposite each other....my son at 4 was see ya...off to school....my daughter god bless her soul....cries all the time. |

| Keep an eye on her. But - please know that most puppies sleep the better part of the day away. In fact, my older dogs probably get 15 hours sleep a day. When they're in the house --what else can they do??? If they were outside dogs, they would be a lot more active. Carol Jean |
