| Why Does My Dog... Smell her own pee (I mean - who else just did that?) Bump her nose into the other dogs butt (how rude!) (Just thought it would be a fun thread - and we could learn something from the silly questions we have that SOMEONE out there knows the answer to)

| I guess they don't think thats rude or gross. When people pick up their pets from my work (grooming shop) they ask why some of them go home and roll in something stinky. I reply because they think they stink. Our idea of what smells good and theirs are totally different! Bugaboo always says "Oh Mama I don't need a Stinkin Bath!"

| anal glands of each dog emits a unique scent. so the smell from their butts are a "name tag" of sorts. so they sniff each other's butts for identification purposes. that least that's what i've read. as for sniffing their own pee... well, they do sniff around for a pee scent to determine where is a good spot to pee or poo. so somehow there is method to their madness i guess.... what i'd like to know is, why does my puppy each his own poo??? now that is GROSS!!! |

On Talking Terms with dogs by Truid Rugrass I think mentions this. As far as smellling own pee it is normal for a dog under stress to pee and smell ther own as a way to calm themselves down. Mine tends to poop if she stressing. Joy | |
