| Pleae help! Flying from NY to Florida next Friday with Joey... Ok, Joey is a spaz - he has soooo much energy and is quite the barker. We are taking him to my fiance's parents house in Florida for the long weekend. I spoke with my vet, and the vet said that they don't normally prescribe sedatives for such a small dog, and that I should try giving him pediatric Benadryl to calm him down before the flight. Well, I picked up the Benadryl last night and gave him the recommended dosage and it didn't help at all!!! I am freaking out....I am supposed to keep Joey in the carrier under the seat in front of me the whole time....there is no way this is going to happen - he is going to bark, bark, bark!! Anyone have any tips to share with me to make this flight bearable? PLEASE! |

| My vet gave Gracie Acepromazine 5 mg tablets. She took 1/4 a tablet 1 hr before travel and repeated as needed every 4-6 hours. It worked ok for us. Gracie weighes 3 pounds and did so at the time also. (She was 14 months old when she took it) She took it when we evacuated for Katrina, 8 hours in a car, she had her moments but I have to say it did cut down the hyperness/barking a bit! For 3 pills, it was about $5.00 but it may be more or less depending on your vet. Hope that helps!

| When I flew with Trixie, I had sedatives with me just in case. But never needed them. I guess Trixie felt 'safe' in her little bag, I had put a little fleece blanky in there, her favorite plush toy and some treats. And she was fine. No whining and no barking. Would something like that help?

| How about getting him preoccupied with a treat - flossies or bully sticks . . .good size ones so it'll keep him busy for a few hours! You never know, he just might get tired gnawing on it and after awhile will fall asleep. Good luck! |

| New York to Florida isn't a really long flight. I would not drug a dog if I did not have to. (Edie flies a lot and has never been drugged.) The KEY is to get your pup used to the carrier. Take him all over town in it. Make it a safe haven and a fun place to be. If he feels safe in the carrier, I don't think you will have a problem. Edie is always quiet when we travel UNLESS we see another dog in the airport. Then she goes crazy. it is embarrassing, but embarrassment has become a state of being for me since I became a Yorkie mama.... |
