| My girl is in heat!! My girl, Dixie, is about 8 and 1/2 months old and just went into heat. I noticed some blood in her crate the other day and it's there again today. She is swollen but seems to be keeping herself clean. My boy yorkie (her brother) is not fixed (appointment scheduled for next month). My question is, should I separate them or will they be fine together? Also, how long will Dixie probably stay in heat and is there anything special I need to do for her? I've never been through this because all previous female dogs I've had have been fixed before they had a chance to go into heat!!! Thanks in advance

| Seperate them for sure or you could be having puppies... Once they start bleeding you can count on about three weeks before she is over her heat. |

| Got to keep her away from her brother. I have heard they are very good at "getting together". Here is a true story I heard a while back. There was a female (can't remember the breed) in heat and was placed in her crate with the door locked. It was for her own protection so that the male can't get to her - well that was what her human thought. Her owner once caught them matting thru the "bars" (or "opening" whatever you want to call it). Yes, she got pregnate. I will be very careful if I were you. Also, I just got my baby spayed yesterday and I learned something very interesting about neutering. On my post-surgical home care instruction, item 8 reads "After nutering, a male can still impregnate a female for up to two months". I thought you might like to know. |

| Yes, keep them seperated. Nothing to really do for her, except put up with her PMS LOL. When the red color turns a straw color is usually when they are ready to accept a male. Also when she stands in front of him & flags her tail as if to say "cmon big boy here I am" make sure they can not get to each other. One of my little studs will whine & howl almost all night long when any of my females are ready. The sounds that come out of him are so funny but also a pain because noone gets a full nights sleep. Also don't depend on panties or belly bands. I had a litter of 5 a few years ago with the panties. Good luck. Your little irl is now a woman. LOL |

Also crazy that boys are so determined that they go through the "panties" and the bars on cages. Right now I keep her in our downstairs bathroom with a baby gate and him in the crate across from her. They're used to being together so I feel bad but at least they can see each other! I scheduled a neuter for him....Monday the 13th...poor Chip

[/QUOTE] Very true in fact as I had a male when I first started who (I bought that I didn't know to check out)only had one testicle, anyways my vet said he should be neutered so this was not passed down. Well all went well with the surgery and I didn't think I would have to seperate him from my female....Low and behold I caught them locked. I freeked out and called my vet, she told me they can still produce for a certain amount of time after the surgery....Well my girl was not pregnant, thank God. But I did learn something new...... |

| Just watch him close, he may climb the baby gate. I had a female get pregnant through a kennel- I could not believe it, when the vet told us she was pregnant. We didn't own any males, and she was out in her lg kennel to go potty, the male apparently got her through the holes in the kennel (chain link fence kind of out door kennels) they were not small dogs either, this was my rotty. I believe the father was the black lab I would see out and about once in awhile, but I really have no idea. She was spayed, and we found out she was also pregnant then. Anyways- watch them close, you may have to move one of them behind a closed door. good luck |

| My Mercedes is 8 months old and in heat also. In addition, I have her brother which is not fixed and would be more than happy to breed with her. I keep them totally seperated. You can't leave them together for a minute! Once they are locked, there is nothing you can do to seperate them. They should not, for numerous reason, breed. You don't want your young female bred at all this heat cycle, she is too young. And yes, it does last about 3 weeks. Super duper pain in the butt, but you must keep them seperated. Now I am juggling schedules so they can both have free time but not be near each other. Mark on your calendar when you notice the bleeding and then don't let them together for 3 and a half weeks to be safe. The bleeding will stop....don't think it is over then....that is when they are ready to breed. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Yes...keep them seperated especially since they are siblings. Question...if the entire testicle was removed, how can they still impregnate a female? Don't they need the testes to produce sperm. Are they neutering now where they keep the testicles and only tie the tubes? I'm a little confused.

I'm not worried about Chip climbing the baby gate - it would be hard for him and when I'm at work/sleeping, I put him in his cage and her in the bathroom with about a foot inbetween the two (bathroom and cage) so it'll be fine. I'm still amazed at how hard the boy dogs try!! Just like human men

| I am not positive, but I think a male dog can smell a female dog in heat for about a 3 mile radius. I am shaking my head even as I type this, because that is a huge distance. I will see if I can find a "fact' on line and post if it is different than the 3 mile radius. They will breed through a baby gate if given the chance. The female can stand backward to it (instinct will tell her to do so) and the male will breed with her. They don't do it out of love for one another or companionship or loneliness (LOL ), just out of pure instinct. Last edited by Julz; 02-10-2006 at 11:00 AM. |
