| Cleaning the eyes Since we got Mitzi, she's cleaned up nicely. She's a little scruffy, floppy eared fur ball, but we love her anyway. She has this black crustiness in the corner of her eyes, and I've washed it and tried to brush it out but she hates it because it must hurt her. I managed to trim the right side with a small scissors, but the other eye is a No No! Any ideas on getting rid of this, and how to keep it GONE!! She hates having her face brushed at the best of times, but she's very nervous when I get around the eyes. I'm scared I'm gonna hurt her. |

| Most Yorkies need daily eye cleaning. I use a washcloth with warm water to soften the crustiness and remove it. It was a lot worse when Edie was young. Now she is 5 years old, and there is a lot less eye discharge. It still needs daily cleaning, however. I would not cut the hair around the eye too short. When it grows out, it will stick up, possibly get in the eye, and cause more eye discharge. It is best if you can grown the hair on the bridge of the nose long enough so it will like down flat--not stick up straight. Some eye discharge is normal, and it is common in many toy breeds. Daily grooming is important. to keep the area around the eyes clean. I hate seeing cute little dogs with crusty faces. And the tear stains look terrible, especially on the white dogs like poodles, malteses, and bichons. With daily handling, your pup might not enjoy the grooming, but she will resign herself to the inevitable and put up with it. Just be gentle and take your time. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Their eyes do tear a bit and I started using EYE ENVY (you can get it from Gerry of www.imapreciouspup.com) and it's WONDERFUL ! It removes the tearstains in days - you don't put it in their eyes - just gently under them and it's the best stuff I've used for tear stains.... but if something is crusted on - I would use warm water first |

| Well, I did as you suggested. Cotton wool, warm water, a bit of rubbing the crusty! WOW! She looks 100% better. She still hates the brushing of the face bit though I'll have to make sure I do that everyday, and she'll stay crusty free. Thanks heaps!! She looks better already, a couple more times like that and she'll be totally fixed up. She likes the cotton wool too, she chews it until the water is gone then spits it out!! LOL |

I don't know what you call it in the US. It's the soft fluffy stuff on the end of Q-tips. You can buy it in bags for taking off makeup, you just rip off a piece. Its like a cotton cloud. Sorry, I hope that helps. When it gets wet, it absorbs the water. It is perfect for wiping delicate areas. | |
