Default Kids...yikes!

Jo and Riley got to meet kids for the first time last night. My nephew, his wife and their 2 little boys, ages 1 and 2, came by for a visit yesterday. Their boys were great with my boys but my boys...well, not too bad but not as good as I had hoped for. By nature Jo is more stand offish so I thought he would stick pretty close to me...wrong! He loved the boys. By nature Riley is overly friendly and loves everyone so I thought he'd love the boys...wrong! He hid behind the couch for a pretty good portion of the night. How do you socialize them with kids? We aren't around kids very often but I don't want them to be afraid when we are. We've been in Petsmart and they were fine with kids that were probably 5 and up so maybe it's just the smaller ones that are on their level? Do I need to take them to a day care center or something???

Star Mine LOVE kids!!

Cricket and Bubba cannot get enough kids. I have a 13 year old and no small ones around. My niece comes to visit a lot and she's 3. Well they amost knock her down with kisses. She will lay on the floor and let them kiss away! Now when other kids come over they do the same thing. Some people have to pick their kids up because Cricket and Bubba are a little too friendly LOL. If they are outside and see kids they go crazy wanting to play with them.

I have an elementary school around the block from me. One day I was walking Nikko around the time school let out and he went crazy with excitement!! He would jump at every kid that passed by because he wanted to play with them all!! I thought yorkies weren't good with kids but Nikko loves them. Maybe you can walk your dogs around a school so they can see and hear kids. That way you can slowly get them used to children.

Mason loves kids...heck he loves everybody! He's around them all the time though since I have 2 and I also run a daycare. May need to take him to the schools or the park and start getting him used to them. Mason and my three yr old are two peas in a pod... LOL

I have 5 lil ones, ranging in age from 18 mo. to 8 yrs. old and my furbaby is great with my kids. I think a lot has to do with what they are use to. Bailey is use to be handled and dressed up like a baby and pushed in the girls strollers. He lets them know when he has had enough but I think enjoys all of the attention he is ALWAYS getting.

My Jewels doesnt like kids either and I have a 5 year old. Chachi does. Jewels hides the whole time kids are in the house. She tolerates Alexa Rae but if she gets too loud Jewels wants to get in my lap to get away. I HAave kids over all the time and Jewels hasnt changed. I think it is their personality and what they are used to.

I forgot to mention Jewels is my more sensitive dog out of my two. Chachi is anything goes but Jewels is real sensitive and really is an adults dog. Thats why I also think it is their own personalities.

Gracie's first interaction with little kids was my friends daughter. She was 1 at the time and Gracie was just 2 months old. Gracie was scared of her at first. But that little girl just sat there and waited for Gracie to come to her. If kids do that then Gracie is fine with them but if they come after her, even if they are just trying to play, Gracie gets scared. I think that is why Gracie is scared of my daughter, because she crawls after her most of the time. The times that Mia has sat still, Gracie has come up to her to check her out.

Default Not Good With Kids

We've had Punkin for just over a month now and our nephew came to stay overnight on the weekend. Punkin did not react well at all. She barked and growled to the point where I had to put her in another room when he first got there. She peed all over the floor (dribbled I should say). We ended up having to put on her harness and leash. Punkin would do well for a while and then she would get all upset about him again - for what seemed like no apparent reason.

What was really scary was she started to nip at his pant legs and when he was putting on his shoes she grabbed his shirt from behind.

When our nephew would play with her she loved it - she would fetch etc and was well behaved. Then he would be setting at the table and she would grab his pant legs and show aggression.

Our poor nephew was discouraged (he's 9). We're not sure what to do - except stay clear of kids until we can start obedience classes.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Something like that would probably be good. Outside a daycare center or a park that you know preschoolers frequent. I wouldn't get too close to begin with (for one thing, Riley might freak). Start from across the street. If Riley acts nervous, you're too close. Back up until Riley is comfortable. Then give the dogs treats.

Over the course of several days, hopefully you can get closer while giving treats. If Riley acts nervous, you're going too fast. Also, you want the dogs on leashes, not in your arms or in a carrier. I know this sounds like a lot of work, but it will be well worth your effort. A dog who is afraid is MUCH more likely to bite than one who isn't! If a child should come running over, hold up your hand like a stop sign and say "STOP. He bites!" Riley isn't ready for sudden displays of affection from little strangers.

It's not uncommon for dogs to be afraid of preschoolers even when they are comfortable with older children. They sound different and look different than older kids. Preschoolers are also much more abrupt and unpredictable in their movements. Overall, much more scary!

Good luck!

My daughters were about 8 and 10 years old when we got Tatum but I have little nephews and cousins that are much younger. When they are around, Tatum tends to stay away from them and want to cuddle with me BUT if she is at their level, like on the back of the couch, and the nephews come up to her, she will smother them with kisses and love all over them. I know it's that she doesn't like to be around their stomping running feet. I think she's been trampled a time or two by them and that seems to be what she's worried about. All's fine as long as she can look them in the face and not have them towering over her.
