will it come out the other end????? hi all , hope everyone and thier fur babies are doing well. i have a question? my 5 month old pepper swallowed a tac yesterday. you know the steel little nails used for bulletin boards. he eats absolutely everything he finds. thread, plasic, paper, pencils, and if he cant chew it he will swallow it whole. i.m forever picking things up so he finds nothing on the floor. well, yesterday my son was on the couch and i had dropped a tac i was using for the back of a picture frame. as fast as it hit the floor it was in his mouth. my son quickly tried to get it out but the little bugger swallowed it faster than you could say omg. it was just very quick and i was wondering if anyone knows if he will poop it out. i,ve been checking his poops ( not something i would recomend to anyone, yukkkkkkkk) and no sign of the tac. is there anything i could give him to help keep things moving??? and has anyone had the " eat anything you see smaller than a breadbox" problem? thanks in advance for any insight anyone can offer me. everyone ive talked to said he should poop it out. geeeesh, tacs, i guess they,re not just for breakfast anymore!!!!! xxxxDanielle

I would say give your vet a call...a tac can cause some damage to his stomach and intestine...so check with him on what you can do to prevent any serious problems!

| Here's what I found but I think the best advice is to check with your vet. COTTON BALL REMEDY What do you do if your puppy (or mischievous older dog) gets into your holiday decorations and eats some of the glass ornaments? This potentially lethal mishap can darken even the brightest holiday season. THE PROCEDURE Go to a pharmacy and buy a box of cotton balls. Be sure that you get COTTON balls...not the cosmetic puffs that are made from man-made fibers. Also, buy a quart of half-and-half coffee cream and put it in the freezer. Should your dog eat glass ornaments. Defrost the half-and-half and pour some in a bowl. Dip cotton balls into the Cream and feed them to your dog. Dogs under 10 lbs should eat 2 balls which you have first torn into smaller pieces. Dogs 10-50 lbs should eat 3-5 balls and larger dogs should eat 5-7. You may feed larger dogs an entire cotton ball at once. Dogs seem to really like these strange treats and eat them readily. As the Cotton works its way through the digestive tract it will find all the glass pieces and wrap itself around them. Even the teeniest shards of glass will be caught and wrapped in the cotton fibers and the cotton will protect the intestines from damage by the glass. Your dogs stools will be really weird for a few days and you will have to be careful to check for fresh blood or a tarry appearance to the stool. If either of the latter symptoms appear you should rush your dog to the vet for a checkup but, in most cases, the dogs will be just fine. This trick should work year round should your dog swallow a staple or other small sharp object, although we do recommend following the advice of your veterinarian.

good question.... Mason too eats everything! But interestingly, I have not seen things come out the other end ! I have seen Mason consume paper, rocks, strings, leaves, etc. Once, he swallowed the back of my diamong earing and it's very unique (it screws to the earing post) - and it would cost me a fortune to replace - so I kept watching Mason's poop to see if I can find it (I know, I know....I was desperate!). But it never came out!! I have no idea where it all goes.......

i have to say that toby is not the "panick and swallow it" type of dog. He will find ANYTHING that is dropped or left out, BUT when i say drop it or No.... he drops it RIGHT AWAY.

Like Babbie said, eating a tac can be dangerous. It can damage some organs. My dog has never eaten anything sharp so I have not done it before, but get some plain cottons balls and feed it to your dog. Pray the cotton wraps itself around the tac preventing any damage to the organ while it pass through the system. Personally, I would take him to the vets. Good luck and I hope the tac pass through his system all right.

OH DEAR, OH DEAR...a TACK? Yes, I have the same problem here, is it a Yorkie's nature to consume anything in site??? Paper, plastic, paperclips, pieces of pinecones and twigs, bugs, flowers, leaves, feathers, pencils. As a former poodle owner, I NEVER had this problem with them. Anything that is dropped is consumed, sometimes I am able to remove from her mouth and other times I dont have the time, and down it goes. Twice she has had diahrria, I am sure its something she has consumed outdoors, but within half a day, she is back to normal stool. I should have named her Hoover! I had never heard of the cotton ball trick, interesting, and will ask my vet, just in case. Thank you Danielle, for bring up this topic, I learn so much here. Chelsea'sMom

Definitely call your vet to be safe. My co-worker's dog (a large dog) swallowed a sock. It sounds harmless, but it made her very sick. She eventually had to be hooked up to an IV, and my co-worker spent over $1500 in vet bills (even with insurance!).

One day i was cleaning up after my puppy and noticed something silver and shiny in her poop...using a piece of tiolet paper i dug through her poop to investigate: a tac. i almost passed out! "That went through her stomach and digestive tract?!?!" She was fine, but had i known about her swallowing it, i probably would have taken her to the vet for an X-Ray or something!!

geeze.....A TACK! Hum....personally I think I would opt for a trip to the vet for an xray just to see where the little bugger was in the intestines. It's surely small enough to pass.....BUT and this is a big BUT.....how much damage will the sharp end do to the intestines. A perforated intestines WILL lead to perontitis which is nearly always fatal to small dogs....not many humans survive an infection of the adomonial cavity. The cotton ball treatment is a very GOOD option. Some vets even recomend this treatment for injected glass. As a reminder to everyone......please do keep a watch for such small items. I knew a Yorkie a couple of years ago.....bred by my friend....but living in a pet home. She ate a bread wrapper that had dropped on the floor!! You know the little wire twisty around the bread. She died from perforated intestines.....there was nothing the vet could do....alto he did try very hard....there were just too many small puntures in the intestinal wall. This was so scary to me.....I now throw the twisty in the trash as soon as I open the breed....I have some plastic thingys I brought at walmart to close the bread. Just passing along information! D

Donating YT 10K Club Member | We had a dog, unbeknowist to us, swallow a sewing needle w/ thread. She was about the size of a sheltie....any way the needle made it all the way her system until it was time to poop. We noticed her straining to poop and crying. Quick look at her....hmmmm....butt hole and it was protuding, (looked like it was turning inside out) Took her to the emergency vet, x ray showed the pin had turned sideways and was stuck in the muscle....when she tried to eliminate....it pushed out her muscle and the fecal matter hurt pressing against it. He was able to remove the pin, pushed her splinter muscle backed inside and did draw string stitches which were removed the next day. Btw, for people "looking" for swallowed items. When I was small I swallowed a nickle....for three days, I had to go potty in a bucket....then my mother "looked" for it....ewwww....needless to say...she finally said....it can stay, I ain't looking any more

My Harley has eaten a lot of things and passed them but a tac you need to worry about. It could puncture the lining of his stomach or intestines or anything else in it's path. Take your baby to the vet ASAP! Please!
