| when to stop worrying about jumping off my lap or couch? I'm still paranoid that he will brake his leg. We have no carpet in the house. If i put him up on the couch or my lap i'm always so paranoid he will jump and her himself. He can do a running jump from the second step from the hallway stairs. He is 15 weeks now. just curious or will he never be able to jump down? |

| I don't feel it's really ever safe for them to do a lot of jumping. I think after awhile it just might take it's toll on their little joints. This may be more so for the tinier Yorkie's then the larger ones?? I have heard that it isn't safe for them to jump more then their body length, not sure if this is true or not?? I guess I just try to play it safe and limit as much jumping from my fur kids as possible. Ransom, our smaller one is not ever allowed to jump off the couch, etc. Schatie I don't worry about as much with this as she is taller than the couch is high so it's more like a "step down with a bounce" than anything.

| Yea, but once they start jumping.......it never stops!!! I have one that finally learned how to jump (claw her way) UP!! But then, couldn't ever get down. She'd bark and bark until someone got her down!! She'd get up all by herself, and then she was stuck! Worked great when I wanted to vacuume tho. I'd just put her up on something in the room, vacuume, go to the next room, go get her, put her up on something in that room etc. But now that she figured out how to get down, it's another story!! Now she jumps up on everything and down too. Suz

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali isn't allowed to jump down either. She uses stairs on my bed and a stool on the living room. She doesn't even seem to want to jump off anything. She waits to be taken off if there isn't a way down. Her back legs already have a slight sublaxing patellas so it's better she doesn't jump.

| Gracie jumps off of everything, includiing the back of the couch. She is so quick I can't stop her. She loves to jump, she will jump up and down on the bare floor just to jump. She looks like she is on a pogo stick sometimes. Should I be worried about that? She is very small.... I never thought about the long term affects of her jumping like that.

| I have the same problem with Gucci. She loves to jump down and she is so fast. I try for her not to jump down but she usually manages. I try for her to jump on a cushion at least, but that is not always possible. She had surgery 7 days ago and the little dare devil keeps juming down. Im just panicking cause Im scare that her stiches will open up. Per the vet she is not suppose to run or jump, but trying keeping her for not doing that has proven impossible. I can't wait until next firday when her stiches come off and she can return to normal activities. I need to get some steps. We made one with boxes but she was scare of them. |

| well, i think it depends on the size, my cousins yorkie is pretty big and she was the runt when smaller! she jumps and runs with their golden retriever just fine. i don't know if they should be worried or not cause shes big and never seemed to have a problem.

| Mine has jumped off and on the couch and the bed since she was 4 months old (and 4,5lbs). I feel a little better now she's 6,5lbs. And we have thick carpet in front of both the couch and the bed. I really can't keep her from doing it.

| Its not good for them to jump when they are puppies. When mine got to 5 months old I didnt worry about it anymore and let them jump.

| I think their size makes a big difference -- as far as how dangerous it is for them to jump off certain things. However - my pup has been a jumper since the day I got him. He's not small. He weighs about (6 1/2 pounds at 5 1/2 months). When I first got him at 8 weeks - he would "climb" on everything - the sofa, etc. And from the get-go, he'd jump off. He didn't just jump. He went up and then out and then down -----sailing through the air like a gazelle. He always landed well and playfully ran off to do something else. I do try to get him before he sails - but I never yell "No no." I don't want to distract him and cause him to lose his concentration and make a bad landing. There is no way I can stop my pup from jumping. But most of the jumps he makes are well within his ability to do well. He only occasionally goes flying off something scaring me to death. Good luck! I guess if you're small --- you just have to jump more! PS: He does have one step that helps him up and off the bed -- because I have hardwood floors in the bedroom. Carol Jean |

| That's funny Carol Jean, I know all about those flying gazelle jumps. Kip is a big girl at 12 lbs. and I never worried too much about her jumping. But at age 3 she slipped on a patch of ice out in the driveway after running like a cheetah and had to have her rear right knee surgically corrected for LP. I'm glad that this subject came up. My new baby will be a lot smaller and now I know to be careful with the jumping. Kip now sits and waits for me to pick her up if she doesn't feel like jumping, or if I am there she'll sit when I say "carry" and I'll help her up. But then she is 6 y/o too.
