How Do You Handle This Situation? Here's the situation... You've adopted a 12 week old Yorkie pup. You spend a weekend with him to get him to learn what it will be like to live with you in your home. You take a few days off from work when you get him as well to get him used to you and your his new surroundings. It's time for you to go back to work, leaving your new baby at home... You cannot come home from work during the day and you will be there from 7:30 to about 6 PM. There is someone who can check up on him, make sure he eats, pees, etc. Where should he be kept during the day? A crate? An X-Pen? What are your thoughts and experiences?

If he is that young, I would say to leave him in an x-pen. An open area may be fine as well (vinyl or tile floors, but definitely not on carpet). Try to leave some music on, or TV on, and maybe a heat blanket or a heartbeat simulator device which may soothe your little one a bit.

Most people would use a crate, but if your yorkie will be alone from 6:30am until 7pm,I would use a play pen or keep him in a small room (bathroom,kitchen..etc).Iv never liked the idea of crates because I think it would drive me mad if I were a small dog..especially if it was for long hours at a time.I would try keeping him in the bathroom or kitchen.Just sweep the floor to make sure theres nothing they can choke on etc,get any trash cans out of the way (or TP if you decide on the bathroom),and then his things..pee pad,toys,bed,water,food..etc.Also,make sure there are no electrical cords to chew on.Doing this he should be fine. Also,I used to leave the radio on when I was going to be a long time,I think it keeps them company (just make sure its out of reach).I honestly wouldent recomend a crate for long hours,to me it seems cruel. They usualy sleep all the time we are out anyway, but its nice for them to have space to move around if they really need too

when we had to leave toby for long periods of time we put him in a pen, BUT he learned how to climb out so now we leave him in the crate, he is now six months old so he can hold it for longer... i think the longest we have left him is 8 or 9 hours

DITTO.... I vote for a playpen or "play-yard" ...or tile/vinyl floor room.......leave a heating pad under bedding....some sound...I used one of those 'sound machines' set on the 'train' noise....sounds alot like a heartbeat! A bed in one end....a pee pad on the other end. I did all this for Lil Bit and she did great! But would bark her silly head off when she heard someone come in the door!!!! Good luck!

I agreed about not leaving him in the crate all day long. Im not to crazy about the crate, but I know this method has work for others. I think a playpen or even a room is better. There you can have a bed, toys , food and pee pads. Also leaving the tv or music on is a great idea. I hope things works out for you with which any method you decide. Good luck.

When we first got bella I kept her in the kitchen. We came home one day and she was gone!!!!!!!!! Well, turns out she got herself into one of the cabinets, the door shut on her and she was trapped. How she got in and was unable to get out is odd, would seem easier go get out than in. lol. anyway, i had to tape all of the cabinets closed and so her next trick was she learned to get over the puppy gate and we now have to leave her in her crate.

I just leave Archie in the house. He goes where ever he wants. Favorite place is a window seat. Unless I have razors lying around the kitchen floor or something, it's not like he's going to do anything bad or get into any trouble if I let him walk around the house...

I'm going to throw out this food for thought. If someone is at work more than 12 hours a day, how much time do they really have for a pup? I'm not trying to be mean, but pups need a lot of time and attention to develop into good family members. If no one is there until 7pm at night that doesn't leave much quality time for puppy training, loving, exercise and so forth. I would seriously consider a rescue or retired older dog for this kind of home situation. Correction!!! Sorry I thought it was till 7:30 at night not 6pm. Dyslexic moment there. It is still a long time to leave a pup but not as bad. Last edited by CC's; 03-23-2005 at 08:39 PM.

Anyway you could get a playmate for him, a second dog? Then they are not so lonely because they have each other.

| Sorry i can't offer any advice really. My boy will be 6 months old on April 1. He has free run of the house and he behaves himself really well when we are not home. I leave food and water for him. He does his business on his pee pad. usually when we get home he is sleeping on the sofa. He was very easy to train to potty. I would probably suggest maybe putting him on a floor with no carpet. With his food and water and keep him enclosed in an area. Oh also a pee pad. But then if he does have an accident it will be easy to clean up and then you won't get mad!!!! Good Luck to you!!!!
