Coat question yet again....i did search I'm still confused. Snickers has a cottony coat. It does seem to matt easily. The breaking patterns are following a normal routine. The question i have is....will snickers ever get a silky coat? I thought i read that once a cottony coat always a cottony coat. Then i read that it changes later and its just a puppy coat. Both his parents have a silky coat with correct colors. Its just this coat is a royal pain in the butt....i mean pain in the butt....his hind legs are the hardest to keep de matted. I never seem to win even though i bathe him atleast once a week. sheryl

I think I can help you with this question When Jess was a puppy, she had quite a coarse coat and it broke easily too, especially when I brushed her.The matting wasnt so bad on the black part of her fur,but it was awful on the red part (legs, head etc),it was almost as if she had two different textures where the colours changed. It was thicker than it is now and I actually liked the way it looked. Now at almost 2 years old,her coat is very thin, its super smooth and easy to comb,it doesnt break and its very fine,so much so that pulling it up out of her face isnt even an option because it just falls down after 20 seconds. Their fur CAN change, infact, many people told me that she would always have a cotton coat that would have no shine to it etc and it hasnt turned out that way at all.I must say that I dont like her coat very much though, its waaay to fine and grows VEEEEEEEEERY slowly, but I guess we cant have our cake AND eat it too lol. Ladys coat hasnt changed at all though,it was thin and fine as a pup,and thats just how it is now,it also grows incredibly slowly

One of you mentioned the different colors on your Yorkie having different textured hair. The exact same thing was true with my puppy. His "black hair" was totally matted and unmangeable. I removed this "black hair" as quickly as it grew out. Following this terrible hair came a coat of very nice, straight, totally manageable silver hair. This new hair does not matt at all. My pup is about 5 months old now and still has only a little of this black hair left around his face and ears. I can't comb through this either, but as soon as it grows out a little more and gets cut off - he'll have 100% great hair. I don't know how old Snickers is - but baby hair can definitely be very different from the hair that follows... it certainly was in my case. However, at 5 months old, I don't expect the texture of my pup's hair to change much more. Good luck!
