anyone here homecook like to share? Anyone on here into homecooking for their Yorkie? I have books and have done research but would love to ask questions of someone who has done it. I posted this on the diet and training too looking for more recipes. The biggest question I ask is about the balance of calcium in the meals. suzie

I cook for mine ALOT because I like them to have variety in their meals. So once a day they have human food whilst their kibble is out 24/7. I make them scrambled eggs with cheese once or twice a week, boiled chiken with rice, peas, carrotts etc 3 times a week and other days they get pasta with veggies, boiled ham, fish, etc.I also give them ALOT of human food treats like raw carrotts, apple, banana, pears, cheese, cherios, etc etc. Iv been doing this for months now and they love it.also, they poop alot less than before and it doesnt smell as bad! lol. I started because my oldest yorkie Lady was put on a high calorie diet to put her weight up,but I thought that just giving ger better meals was a healthier way of doing this, she eats more now than when she was just on kibble. I still give her half a can of her high calorie food a day,but not the 2 cans she used to have to eat

No,I dont add calcium because they get their kibble too,so its all very balanced. If they ONLY had human food as their meals, then I would have to add certain vitamins to make up for what they are missing out on.I have always given my girls human food.As puppys I didnt give it to them as meals,it was more like a treat.BUt after they were about 10 weeks old I started to cook meals for them a couple of times a week. It was mainly rice and chicken at first, but my vet gave me a list of foods that I could cook for them and I started making other things too, like boiled fish with rice and veggies etc.I have to admit that they have also had the odd plate of spaggeti bolonaise (sp?) and even pizza! lol.But this is deffinately just a treat and doesnt happen often. If your yorkie gets one human food meal a day but has kibble down 24/7 and eats that too,you shouldent have to add anything to the food.Too much calcium isnt good for them either,my vet said that it can cause blindness if it reaches high levels in their blood so I would deffinately ask your vet before you give your yorkie calcium as a supliment.

Neither of my dogs like dog food (with a couple exceptions) So, I have almost given up and also feed them people food. I do keep Iams dry dog food out for them at all times (they really don't like it, but do eat it now and then (rarely) when they get hungry.) Recently, I found one dog food that they will eat - the trick is to give it to them when they are hungry - when they first get up in the morning or when I first get home from work. It's Pedigree "Little Champions." So - I give them both a little of this every day. Otherwise, I don't worry a lot about what I give my dogs. I try and give them a variety of healthy people food. They do not get junk food. No cookies, potato chips, candy, etc. I give my dogs chicken and other meats - cheese, cottage cheese, vegetables, eggs, leftovers (from my meals), raw carrots to chew on, and all sorts of different foods. I don't feed them a lot of the same foods all the time - but rather a variety of different healthy foods. However - regardless of what I feed them - as long as I have their dry Iams out for them and feed them a little Pedigree - I know regardless of how picky they are - they won't starve. Aren't dogs fun!!!!! Carol Jean

Home cooking I have no choice but to cook for my lil' angel. Sadly, here in Tunisia pets are not a priority, and there are no pet shops. It took us two years to find a puppy. If I wanted to buy pet food that is of any real nutritional value, i'm afraid she'd starve. There's just one place to buy things for animals and that's the local super market, and they have nothing worth buying. Consequently, Mitzi is on a home cooked diet. She loves boiled chicken and fish, rice and veggies and pasta. She has carrots for snacks and apples. She has scrambled eggs for breakfast or rice with some watery milk, which she loves like crazy. I have no idea what to give her with calcium in it. I didn't know it was a problem. Is there any human food which I can give her to supplement the calcium?

| I believe that cottage cheese is a good source of calcium. I buy the organic salt-free kind and Bentley LOVES it. He gets about a tablespoon a day as a snack.

only people food Hi, Our vet recommended only people food. He said 1/3 starch, 1/3 fruits/veggies, 1/3 protein. We've been doing this for 3 weeks and Punkin loves it! She has not had any problems so far. I do worry about how much too feed her. We couldn't pin the vet done to an amount. She goes in for spaying next week so I'll find out then how her weight is. I try and vary her diet, I give her what I can from what we are having and cook extra for freezing. For treats she loves bananas, apple, carrot, brocoli etc. I also keep frozen blueberries, strawberries and raspberries for her. She loves to have them frozen and because she doesn't eat much of these each day they don't spoil. Alexis

Wow, I cant believe how far you live and I wanted to say hi!. As for the calcium, do you think maybe you could get some sort of dog vitamins with calcium as an easy supplement? Maybe from Petedge?

My Madison is a picky eater. I give her Little Caesar's which she does enjoy but only certain "flavors" I do give her cheese for a little calcium, but my vet recommended low fat cheese. Cheerios are a must!!!! She gobbles them up!! And of course a scrambled egg with a little cheese, boiled chicken, rice etc... What worried me when we first got Madison (back in July) was that she wasnt eating or not eating enough. I have only had one time where her sugar dropped and I had to give her a little Karo syrup..but I always have that in my cabinet as a back up just in case. The quickest way we got some weight on her was feeding her the boiled chicken. It's a great source of protein!!! She is 10 months old today and weighs 7lbs.

I moved here from The UK. It took some adjustments for me to find the things I like and need. As for the puppy, there are litterarly NO pets shops at all. I mean NONE!! The priority here is people, as the average income is about 300 Dinar, which is about $120 per month. (The economy is adjusted to fit the average income of course.) They simply can't afford pets. There are pet owners, but they tend to be those who are better off financially, but as they work long hours for their money, there isn't time for pets I guess. I mentioned it took us Two Years to find a yorkie here. They tend to go for the rotweilers and dobermans as guard dogs. But I'm not sad! LOL I love it here, and when you know where to find things and how to improvise, it's all good. Mitzi is well fed and happy so far, she eats African food, lol. She seems to love it, her favorite at the moment is Couscous. I have a calcium rich cheese now, its natural goats cheese, its similar to cottage cheese, but the african equivalent.
