Default Some day to day care questions

Hello! I am a new Yorkie owner, my Milo is 7 months old. He is a "bigger than average" Yorkie at 16lbs [He is big, not overweight, I hear s**t about it all the time, how he isn't a "real" Yorkie due to his size from people who don't have a clue] recently I've noticed that he has a bit of a dry skin issue, also his hair has spots where its brittle. Particularly the hind area where his hair is wirier than the rest of him. Suggestions?

As to the weight of your pup, my now passed girl weighed in at 17 pounds as an adult, not fat, she had a beautiful sleek body just a big girl, she also was AKC registered. I heard the same thing about my girl from ppl who knew nothing about yorkies. Just ignore the know it all's.

As for the dry skin, could be from the heat in your house, no moisture. How was his skin before the winter, was it normal or flakey. How often do you bathe him, to many baths could also dry the skin and blow drying also.

I don't want to offer up what I have read some members do / give for their babies if I cannot quote correctly. I am sure you will get suggestions from members that have gone through this.

Piper is 9 1/2 lbs and I, too, have been told she "can't be a Yorkie" because she's "too big." Well, what I have learned on this site is: A Yorkie is a Yorkie is a Yorkie. No such thing as a "teacup" and all that! And besides, I know what she is (Yorkie) and the perfect little pooch for me! And that is better than good enough!!! Enjoy your precious bundle--I'll bet Milo brings you tons of happiness!

Have you had the vet check it out to make sure there isnt a skin issue?

If there is no health/skin issue - I'd add a fish oil or similar.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
He was born in August, and when we got him he wasn't in great shape. His puppy hair was shiny but his skin was a mess and he was covered in fleas at 5 weeks.

Yes, I have checked w the Vet. So far its not medical so I was thinking it could be food or maybe baths once a week are too much? Idk. I try to wait longer than a week but believe it or not, He walks into the shower himself every chance he gets until I bathe him.
I'll try the fish oil.

I ignore what people say about his size. It really makes zero difference to me, he is the best dog in the world. I just hate how pushy and insistent they get. Like if you don't believe what he is that is fine but just shut up and move on. No, he doesn't look like a Schnauzer or anything else for that matter so just drop it. lol

If your using a good shampoo bathes once a week are fine. What shampoo are you using? I doubt its food, food allergies are rare. I have a 17 pounder, a 12 pounder and a 10 pounder so I get the annoyance of people not believing they are Yorkies. You could always tell them that Yorkies have actually been bred down to a smaller size and originally were bigger then the show standard now although some people think they know it all.

Last summer I was at Home Depot, Cody (who weighs a mere 12 Lbs) was sitting in the baby seat. A young fellow comes up to me and asks me what mix is he, WHAT!!!!! I say he's a yorkie just over standard size, he says he has a mix I forget what it was, well that was a first for me. Because of all this cross breeding "designer" dogs now my dog looks like a mix cos he's not a 5 pounder lol.

No that's a healthy attitude! And you know what, I doubt most of those pushy, rude, critical, intrusive types even have a Yorkie---big, small, or in between! I'm with you...I, too, have the best (too-big-to-be-a-Yorkie) dog in the world!!!

I totally love that he is not a tiny little thing that could be easily breakable, don't get me wrong, I still take super great care of him, but I like that he is a small dog but he is sturdy, he plays with other dogs all the time, like our JRT.
He doesn't love the warm weather but then, animals are like people, we all have preferences. I don't care what people say, it's annoying how pushy they can be. Determined to convince me that he is not a Yorkie.

No ma'am. They do not have Yorkie's themselves. Even the groomer and vet have told me Yorkie's come in all sizes but you know people. Opinionated and annoying people is what they are hahaha

Yup! That was like the lady that told me at the vet's that he was a schnauzer mix not a 100% Yorkie. I was like really lady? You pay me what I paid for him, and he can be ANYTHING you want him to be.

Ignoring those people is good advice.
At one time I got to where if one more person asked if my dog was a Teacup I was going to have to be restrained

People can be so rude. My Gidget is 5lb at 2 years. People are always asking me if she is a tea cup. I tell him "No. She's on the lower end of the standard weight scale." Don't think they believe me because people can be so obsessed with tea cup Yorkies. I would love my little Gidget is she weighed twice as much or even more. She's my constant companion and I wouldn't trade her for anything in this world. I tell people she's my million dollar dog because I wouldn't take a million dollars for her.

My boys are brothers from two different litters: Couldn't be more different. Zeus is more standard (blue/golden and 5.5 lbs. like his mama), and Perseus is not (black/reddish-gold and 7 lbs. but with a slightly longer body like his daddy). I could care less if they were alien dogs from Mars. I love them more than anything. They both have sensitive stomachs and are on prescription food; however, Perseus suffers terribly from environmental allergies. He itches constantly and has drier skin. We use prescription dog shampoo and milk bath conditioner on him. (He also takes an allergy pill daily.) The poor baby went outside yesterday, and the pollen is so bad right now, we had to bathe him the minute he came inside. He'll try and lick the pollen off his feet and then sneezes constantly. It's best that he avoid outside right now. Bad thing is they both despise the heat, and we live in the worst area for them -- hot and humid most of the year.
