New member Hello Thank you for allowing me to join. I am awaiting a new companion. She is a yorkie poo. She is currently 3 weeks old and very tiny. She will get to come home in April. Her mom is all yorkie and very small (not teacup) and dad (yorkie poo) is also on the smaller side. Had I not been told he was mixed with poodle I would have never known. I have family that a yorkie owns so I have been around them just never had one to own me. I recently lost a miniature schnauzer this past December at the age of 13. I was hesitant about getting a puppy but I so miss her and her company and I want to have that enjoyment again. I know all the stuff I own is way to big for my new addition to come. Since this group has such knowledge with this breed I was hoping someone could give me their best estimations on her adult size. I know there is no guarantee until she is grown but I would like to buy some stuff so it can have my scent. I have already sent a blanket with her that has my scent on it. My best guess is around the 5-6 pound range. I would appreciate any help or suggestions and thank you in advance. |
Hello! Welcome to YT!! If she's currently 3 weeks, I would highly recommending waiting until at least end of May so that she's 12 weeks old by the time she leaves her mommy. There's no benefit of bringing her home earlier than that, only risks of behavioral issues down the road. |
Thank you I appreciate your answer and it will be mid April (guess I should have added that) making her around 10 weeks. Current owner will not let them leave before 8 weeks but prefers 10 weeks |
Well, this may sound weird, but try to push for 12 weeks. :) Obviously the choice is yours. It doesn't seem like much time, but the extra 2 weeks' time with their mommy is really effective. They teach them that they shouldn't bite and other mommy-puppy stuff. You'll have the next full year to play with her as a puppy! :D |
Welcome to YT, how exciting for you a new baby. canana is correct in stating the puppy should stay with the momma and litter mates until 12 weeks old. In this time the momma is teaching her babies bite inhibition, hard play biting is not acceptable the litter mates play a big role in teaching this also. In many cases the puppies are also potty pad trained. I know you have no control over what the breeder wants, and many ppl want their puppy ASAP. Taking a puppy before 12 weeks you will find a very nippy biting baby, then it is up to the human mommy to teach the puppy no biting. I have seen several yorkie poos of different sizes, determining their size as adults is almost impossible, it all has to do with the genetics of the parents, their parents, grand parents, great grand parents and so on. Because the momma and poppa are small does not always mean their offspring will be the same size. I suggest waiting until you get your baby. Whatever you get now will be huge, but you can buy toys and bed now, that's always fun. |
So sorry for your loss but congrats on the new puppy. Puppies seem to always help me with loss. It’s really hard to guess the size of the pup with out knowing the the parents lines and how big the puppies in their lines and there parents were and stuff. So you will probably just have to wait and see. |
Hello and welcome to YT :) |
My deepest sympathy on your loss. I am sure your soon to be new baby will keep you busy and bring smiles back into your life. Trini |
welcome to yt |
Hello and WELCOME :)! A "good" breeder of tiny dogs will always keep puppies until at least 12wks, and often longer. My tiny Marcel was kept until 16wks, and I sure am grateful to my breeder that he was! The tiny ones are incredibly fragile and vulnerable, trust me. As far as weight - one can't even begin to guess until at least 8wks of age - and even then, you can still be 100% wrong in that guesstimate, lol :D. Can't wait to see pics of your little one - post them when you get some :)! |
