Here rabies is legally required. Mine go lots of places so it’s important I keep them up to date on their vaccines to keep them safe. My oldest girl has Cushings so her immune system is weak so she could die from something like the dog flu so I can’t chance it. I do disimper and parvo every three years, rabies legally every three years. We have a huge Lyme issue here so mine get Lyme which is yearly. Because I take them lots of places I also get Bordatella yearly. I will now keep up with the dog flu vaccine as well. Vaccines do have there place and are important. Your vet might not have known what is best to do with small dogs though I doubt it was money related.

I do not let my vet give my kid double shots, I pay the extra office visit and get separate vaccine. Years back I had an older girl that had a bad reaction to double vaccines, my younger one was ok, the older one had to be kept for 4 hours, they had to reverse the shots. After that, they never got back to back vaccines.

Lyme is a core vaccine in my county.

Here you just have to have the rabies done by the vet and you can make a tech appointment for any of the other shots which is what I do. Joey is soooo sensative.

Food for thought:

A Science-Based Vaccination Schedule For Your Dog And Cat

Giving a dog Benadryl and Metcam will make him comfortable after a vaccine. But the dog’s body is trying to tell you something, depending on his post vaccine symptoms. More severe symptoms should not be ignored, and IMHO a less frequent vaccine schedule would be discussed with my vet. Lyme vaccine only works 60-70% of the time, and there are topical tick repellants that can be used if you decide not to vaccinate.

I think the Flu vaccine helps to lessen the severity of the disease, but does not prevent a dog from acquiring the disease. With dogs that have problems getting vaccines, I would skip this one too and keep the dog in the house, or at least away from other dogs and areas that other dogs frequent a lot.

Leaving my dogs in the house isn't an option. We enjoy pet expos and pet events and with Callie turning 11 I will not suddenly take something away from her that she really loves so she can spend what time she has left being sad in the house. Her immune system is also weakened due to Cushings so any help I can get from any vaccines to keep her healthy is better then none. Joey does lots of training classes and soon Penny will too so like I said keeping them stuck in the house isn't an option for us. Topical's also do not prevent a dog from getting Lyme disease. May times through Callie's life she has still gotten ticks on her and not all of them even died after biting. Lyme is a big thing in Maryland so I will not, not get that vaccine, there were several dogs on YT around the time mine got their vaccine that died from Lyme and I'm not risking it if there is a vaccine for it. I believe the flu vaccine keeps them from getting flu and even if all it did was lesson the flu that still is better then the full flu especially when you have an immune compromised dog. Joey is the only one of my dogs that had a reaction to a vaccine and it was when he was a 3 pound puppy and it wasn't a deadly reaction he just got painful and very lethargic. I will not chance it now and I give bendaryl before hand just encase and he gets metcam for up to three days after and is fine. He is a very sensitive little guy. I do DAP every three years as well as rabies those are not frequent but the Lyme and Bordatella are yearly and there is no way around that. Other then my classes I have put a lot of thought and care into what vaccines I give and don't give. I feel like I am doing best by my babies. Vaccines are very important and for those of us that like to do lots and lots of outings and dog event with our babies not vaccinating and locking them in the house isn't an option and not fun for them if they are used to outings and events.

For an article called a science based vaccination schedule, it was rather sensationalistic and unscientific. I don't necessarily disagree with the conclusion (that core vaccines should be given every 7 years instead of every three), but the article doesn't present any evidence to that effect. (Maybe it's buried in the references?) There are other threads on Yorkietalk that debate the vaccine schedule and do provide the evidence. In many (most?) parts of the US, you would be breaking the law if you did not get the core vaccines on the AVMA recommended schedule of 3 years for the core vaccines. You would risk having your dog taken and euthanized. Until the laws change, I wouldn't be recommending that people break them.

In my part of the country, we get the leptospirosis vaccine and not the Lyme's vaccine--it really depends on where you live. Bordetella is required by the groomer and boarders. I will start the dog flu series at Bella's next appointment. Bella is not extremely exposed to other dogs (other than grooming and boarding), but we are close enough to one of the ground zeros (Chicago) to warrant it.

As far as taking my dogs into the USA, they must have all their shots up to date...and at that time I will definitely get what is the minimum required....NOTHING more.... I thought the article from Canada was well done, JMHO
I'm so sorry to hear about your experience! I guess I was very lucky my breeder warned me about how most vets don't realize that smaller pups cannot handle so many shots at a time.

To take dogs into US, you definitely need rabies shots and the rabies certificate with the dates of when it was administered and when it expires. The last time I crossed the border, they were very strict about it. Luckily, I always bring it with me in their carriers. The rabies tags are not enough for customs. Oh and also, the rabies shots must be administered some time (I think it's 30 days) before you can cross the border.

Here are the regulations: https://www.cdc.gov/importation/brin...ates/dogs.html . If a dog has never been vaccinated for rabies before, it has to be done at least 30 days prior to bringing it into the US. That's to give the antibodies a chance to build up.

Here are some good links to vaccine info and an interview with Dr Schultz about vaccines.

I feel like I killed my own dog Tink because in hindsight I could have made better decisions in managing her health. I will share what I have learned.

1. All dogs are different.
Tink was a special needs dog with liver issues. Vaccines are processed/metabolized through the liver, so I was never sure if her body was producing antibodies from the vaccines. After discussing her situation in great detail with her vet, it was decided to only keep her current with her Rabies vaccine every three years. She had been given all her puppy shots, I may have given boosters when I adopted her as a 2 year old. I should have run titers on her at some point as that would have told me for sure if the vaccines worked, or not. I limited her exposure to other dogs in an effort to protect her.

2. Do blood work and get the results before getting vaccines.
Dogs can be ill without showing any signs. Vaccinating a sick dog doesn’t work because the sick dog’s antibodies will wipeout the vaccine before it has a chance to work, and it can make a dog more sick.

3. Vaccines, surgery, injuries, illness, and bug bites
All stimulate/challenge the immune system to produce antibodies. Too many concurrent challenges to the immune system can break it. It can go into overdrive and start attacking the dog’s own good cells, which will cause death. I always waited four weeks after a vaccine, surgery or illness/injury to schedule a surgery or another vaccine. A vaccine’s action on a dog peaks at 2 weeks, and should cease totally after 4 weeks.

Tink always appeared to handle her vaccines and surgeries well. But this last time was not good, as she needed her Rabies vac and surgery to remove a lump in her abdomen. This was too close together, her immune system went crazy and the end result is that she died. For the record, Tink was a 16 pound purebred Yorkie.

I hope and pray this doesn’t happen to anyone else’s dog. Please vaccinate wisely. My basic rule is to not vaccinate against diseases that can be successfully treated, and to use other methods when and where available and appropriate. Of course this depends on my lifestyle and what I choose to expose my dogs to.

Not a big fan of there’s. I’m sorry you feel you killed her but I’m sure you didn’t. 2 weeks between surgeries and vaccines is fine. There is no treatmeant for the dog flu but they can die and develop secondary infections that can also kill them so if you take your pets out and live in the area effected it is a good idea to get the dog flu shot. With bordatella sure it can be treated but it can take over a month to treat and multiple antibiotics which also can negatively effect their immune systems too. It can also cause secondary infections that can again cause great distress and even death. Lyme isn’t really curable either and can also be deadly. My vet does not give shots when they are sick and that’s why they do a wellness check up before giving shots. I differently think sick or sensative dogs definitely need different precautions or a different vaccine plan I think it’s not very common. I am a huge fan of vaccinations and get all available for me so as long as they are safe for my puppies I will do the same. Callie can not afford to get sick with her compromised immune system so she needs to be protected and can’t have her siblings bring anything home to her either. I’m just not willing to risk their life’s when they can be vaccinated for things that could kill them. Vaccines are safe and necessary with dogs who do not have issues with them and are generally healthy. It’s very difficult to “break” an immune system. I saw some of the cases of not vaccinating in my vet assistant classes and it’s scary.

You links say you can start vaccinating at 6-8 weeks old but that’s not true, science has shown that and vaccines before 8 weeks are useless. Also titers are useless as well.

kjc--You sound like an intelligent, careful and caring, totally loving 'mom'/owner. I think we all feel responsible for anything untoward that happens with our little ones, but I hope you can forgive yourself for something that you absolutely did not do 'killing Tink.' We can't know what we don't know and it would seem you did your absolute best with your Tink at every turn. You took such wonderful care of you little (13 lbs!!) one. Thank you for sharing what you learned over time and I know that I will be copying and saving your post for reference. I think Tink had a wonderful life with you and probably a much longer one than she would have had with anyone else. I'm not expressing myself very well here, I just think you did everything possible for Tink and the last was simply out of your hands.
