I assume that you're referring to all dog vaccinations, including rabies. I found an article about vaccinations in Canada, and it's fascinating. Evidently, neither the Canadian government nor the provincial governments require vaccinations for dogs, despite the high prevalence of rabies in Canada. Having seen the effects of rabies and distemper on humans and animals respectively, I'm thankful that the US has core vaccine requirements. Dogs coming to the US from Canada are required to show proof of vaccination (thankfully), and I'd recommend that people traveling to Canada from the US make sure their vaccinations are up to date before traveling. (There is another thread on Yorkietalk about someone traveling by airplane to Saskatchewan.)

Well I would like to put my two cents in on the flu vaccination. We gave our fur kid the first shot of Nobivac Canine Flu Bivalent . She got so sick it cost us 300.00 dollars to get her better. My vet wanted to give her the second shot a month later and it was no way. She had problems for three months after so not for me . Susan

Can I ask what you mean by sick like details? Their will be the occasional dog that has an adverse reaction. One of mine is sensative to vaccines so I’m giving him Benadryl before we leave. The fear of my older girl getting the flu and not recovering scares me more then the vaccine.

I agree. And we're not here to judge. I'm curious whether the dog has reactions to other vaccines, or whether it was only the canine influenza vaccine. And I'd like to know what the symptoms were, and how they were treated, and what the $300 in treatment paid for.

Anyway, Taylor, let us know how your dogs are doing after they get their vaccinations today!

They go in at 1:40pm. I will get back on before the end of the night and let y’all know how it goes. Hopefully uneventful.

My yorkie has had a flu vaccine when she was little. She will be eight years old in April and she got a bad reaction. Throwing up,diarrhea and no energy . As I said we had to take her in. They gave her Benadryl which did not help so they put her on a stomach medication and something else. I have talked to another vet and that can happen but I will never have her go through that again. They get two shots and I refused the second one not taking any chances. Just myself I had a flu shot years ago and really got sick from it so my doctor does not want me to get another. I think this subject is up to each individual what they want to do. Kinder gets all her vaccinations I am a firm believer but no more flu vac. Susan

This vaccine wasn’t around 8 years ago so I’m thinking it must have been something else.

We gave our little the Nobivac Canine Flu Bivalent end of August 2017. There are two shots so she had to go back end of September 2017 to get the second one which we refused. As I said before when she was two years old we got the flu shot for her when we were in Florida. She had no side effects but now she is 71/2 years old. That is what happened to our yorkie. We take good care of her have insurance on her too. I guess I will not tell my experience of what happened to us, I will just keep my mouth shut. I do not believe anyone is doubting your experience, everyone just wants to get details in order to better understand what transpired with your little girl; she's beautiful and I'm soo happy she is as healthy as she looks!. None of want to take risks with our little ones and learning from others will hopefully help us to avoid any like instances.

The canine influenza vaccine first came out in 2009, so I believe you. I think it was for just a single strain back then. Now it's made for two strains, so it's a different vaccine now. Please feel free to tell us your story if you want to.

Slightly different topic. Human vaccines: I just got the new Shingrix shingles vaccine today. I was the first person vaccinated at our CVS location, so I was kind of an experimental animal for them. No pain or other side effects so far. It's a lot more effective than the old Zostavax shingles vaccine, and you can get it if you're over 50, as opposed to over 60 for the Zostavax. I'm not making a recommendation one way or the other, but if you're concerned about shingles, this might be something to consider.

I am sorry I think we misunderstood each other. I thought you said she got this flu vaccine 8 years ago and this shot didn't exist then I don't believe. I'm sorry you thought I thought you were lying because I didn't. I think we just misunderstood each other. Please do continue to share your experiences.

Vet only had two shots because people have been coming in a lot for them so Callie and Joey were the two that got vaccinated. One because Callie is older I worry more about what would happen if she got it and Joey was already benadryled and he starts agility next week. They should have more in toward the end of the week and then I can take Penny. I also gave Joey his metacam that we do for 2 days after his shots and he is doing fine. He is actually running around playing and Callie is her normal self.

My vet told me last August that this was the newest flu vaccine and it came out sometime in 2016. It was for two strains of the flu so we did that in August 2017. She was suppose to get the second dosage in September a month apart. Anyways she got really sick from that vaccine so I did not want to have to go through this again for the second shot. Sometimes I wonder about these vets you really need to do your homework before you go ahead with their advice. I had an avian vet break my parrots neck right in front of me and he denied it. If I had a new dog I would definitely would try the flu vaccine on it but for some reason Kinder could not tolerate it. As for me I have bad allergies and my doctor will not give me the flu and shingles shot because of my low immunity from allergies. That shingles is awful my father had on his head and after it went away he had bad headaches the rest of his life. You are lucky you can take the shingles shot and I think I am going to ask at Walgreens and see what they say for me. Best wishes to you with that shot. susan

Sorry to hear about your experience with your vet. If the first of the two shot series gave a bad reaction, I can't imagine the vet wanting to continue with the second shot.

The new Shingrix shingles vaccine is supposed to be more effective and give fewer side effects than the old vaccine. My doctor wouldn't allow me to get the old Zostavax vaccine, but it was okay for me to get the new one. However, if you have allergies, I'd be very cautious and make sure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in the new vaccine. Walgreens should have that information.
