Question 7 year old Yorkie violent biting outbursts

My finances dog, Izzy, is a yorkie and she recently attacked me after a nice visit to the park ( i was checking her for bugs/ticks) as i ran my hand on her belly toward her private area, she violently bite me. I held her down (she thinks she is pack leader) now she resents me or Leah even petting her, but she will come sit by us and expect not to be petted. Yesterday she was on the couch and i tried to pet her at her eye level, she jumped off the couch and bite me twice( one left 4 tiny teeth marks) in the back...today, i told her to get off the couch since she didnt want pet, and she responded by growling and she jumped off the couch and mid jump she bite my finger and it nearly ripped my finger to shreds. Any advice? We want our loving dog back, but she freaks out if you touch her back legs/butt area/low stomach area. Shes eating and drinking fine...we just moved 3 weeks ago for first time and she seemed great with it until now.

Any advice will help!!! I dont want to be bitten and i want my giancee to be able to pet her dog.

Welcome to YT, glad that you found our community.

More info is needed on your relationship with this pup. How long have you been in her life, how was she towards you before the move, how close is she with your fiancés, who feeds, walks, grooms, her. Who trains her and rewards her with her fav. treats

New moves are very stressful on animals. All that was familiar to them is gone, now they have to adjust to new smells in and out side of the home. She is undergoing a lot of stress and until she gets used to her new home you will need lots of patience and she will need extra TLC. If you know she doesn't like to be touched in certain places for now avoid those areas, if you are going to be the pack leader that is a job that must be enforced everyday, not just when you feel firmness is needed.

Give us more information so we may be able to offer suggestions, advice, tips.

You have two threads going on the same topic, you must stick to one thread, I responded on the other thread where very little info. was given.

For starters, was this pup ever trained basic commands.
Was this pup taught who was in command or was she just left to be the boss.
How long have you been in this pups life.

When a dog is on their back they are very vulnerable, you holding her down put her in defensive mode therefore the bite. If no training has ever been given to this dog she must now be re-programed to know who is in command. At age 7 this will take some work and lots of tender patience. Being in command is a full time job, not to be used every once in a while, dogs need a leader and if there is not one, they become the leader.

Why do you think she "needs" to be petted just because she wants to be near your or her momma, yorkies are ppl dogs, they like to be and some even "need" to be close to their humans, but not necessarily want to be petted, just want to be close to you. My boy will sit next to me and press his butt into my thigh, he needs that closeness, but he doesn't always want to be touched by me, he just wants the body contact comfort.

If you know there are parts of her body she does not want touched why insist on touching her there unless it is absolutely necessary. It sounds like she has lost trust in you, and it is now up to you gain that trust back.

New moves on animals are very stressful, all that she was familiar to her is gone, she now has to adjust to many new things, smells in and out of the home. You will need much tender patience with her and give her extra TLC until she adjusts to her new home. If she just wants to sit or lay beside you let her, don't pet her.

Has she had a recent vet check to make sure these areas that she doesn't like to be touched there is no pain there, has she had her teeth looked at to make sure there is no infections there. If not I would start off with that, get a clean bill of health on her then start working on the biting issues.

First of all, get rid of the pack mentality thing.....if you hold a dog down, you are scaring them. That is not a way to get a dog to respond to you in a positive way. The only way they can protect themselves from aggressors (you are an aggressor to her) is with their teeth!

Start with simple training ... sit, down, etc and treat and PRAISE her every time she responds. Don't let her have anything without following a command such as sit. For food...for going outside etc.

I suggest you look over this website. Tamar Geller does have online training course, but honestly I don't know anything about it. I DO know that she is highly respected as a dog trainer. You might want to buy her book "The Loved Dog"

The Loved Dog – Tamar Geller's Best Dog Training & Boarding in Los Angeles

Also, I agree with Matese....a visit to the vet is in order to rule out any physical problems.

Dogs do not see people as pack leader so whatever your doing with that I would stop. It is very possible she is hurting if this is a new behavior. I would have a vet check done and that is ok then go to a behavioralist.

Many years ago my first yorkie would bite at me unexpectedly. One vet told me to put him down but I pursued the problem. He was in pain which I found out from another vet and it was his anal glands. We had to have surgery and remove them and he was fine after that. I would maybe have your fur kid checked out it could be a pain issue. Susan

Dogs do not see humans as pack leader so stop with doing things related to that. If this is a new thing I really think it might be a health issue and she needs to be checked out by the vet. If the vet doesn’t find anything then I would consult a behavioralist.

She was very warm to me before the move, and since i checked her for ticks( we were laying on the rug, faces close to eachother aftee the park, both of us tired, when i asked her to come over and get checked, and she did fine me checking her legs but once i hit the stomach area she snapped...also...apparently when she got spayed, she backed her butt up against the wall for a day or so (this was 6 years ago) but maybe this is why she licks the area constantly and is protective over it?

Instead of guessing, my suggestion is to take her to the vet and have her checked out. As for licking, they do lick themselves...both males and females.

In the meantime, just don't touch her there if she is uncomfortable with it. Problem solved.

Has the vet been told about this, Izzy protecting her stomach, there may be something going on there. I would def. have the vet check this out. She may be in pain if this is a sensitive area. Dogs are very good at hiding pain.

We just went on a walk, a dog came at us, a 5 mpnth old pit bull, she let me pick her up without incident, dog got put back in by owner, we continued walk, and we even ran when we got to the park. She was rewarded treat for sitting (quite quickly she did too!) And she is seeming to warm up a little again to me, she even appeared to want a belly rub, which she then put her guard back up...keeping an eye on her. Mommy said vet will be scheduled.

Well that sounds good, maybe more reward treats from you is what she needs to gain that trust back in you. Ya know what they say about "a way to a mans heart is through his stomach" lol, well, that also works for dogs lol. But I would def. have that vet check about sensitive outer stomach. And PLEASE, never hold a dog down while it is on it's back.
