| PetSmart Training Well, I'm disappointed. Took Gidget for her first lesson 8/5. There were 2 other dogs there--both lab mix but not huge. Both were 1 yr . Trainer spent most of the time talking and interacting with dogs on a so-so basis. Gave us a lesson to practice the next week--sit and look at me. Last Saturday when I went in there was Gidget and the other 2 dogs from last week. THEN, a woman and her 14 yr old son bounded in with a 7 month old mixed breed that must weigh 50 lbs. or more. She also had her dog in the training area. So now we have 5 dogs and 8 adults in this very small room. Trainer finally had to tie the new dog to a stake that was in the floor just to keep her from lunging at the others. Now, we have 4 dogs ranging from 4 lbs to at least 50 in this small room She did a lot of talking about our next assignment of loose leash walking and sit and greet. Then she took us out into the store for us to find people for our pets to greet. Then, she had us practice llw and she actually took each dog on a separate walk between 2 aisles. I've just sent a msg to PetSmart telling them how disappointed I was in the whole setup. If I had known there would be BIG dogs in that SMALL area for training I would have looked elsewhere. I'm waiting for a response from their Customer Service. Does it look like I might recommend them to any of my friends for dog training? (Just had to vent). |

| I have never been to a training class that didn't have dogs of all sizes. Actually Joey has been the smallest in all of our training classes and its never been a huge issue. Unless you go private lessons you are always going to have different sized dogs in the class. Part of it is also getting your dog to do well with other dogs and not be distracted by them.

| All of Cali's training classes have been mixed sizes, and she was always the smallest. Dogs were always kept under control and did not fraternize with each other. We started our first training at a Petsmart and a lot of the exercises were out in the store also. I think the operative words here are - all dogs had to be kept under the handlers control at all times. When you start out almost none of the dogs are totally under control until they learn that part. I was always protective of my dog that was the smallest.

| Thanks for your reply. About a year ago I had a 15# dachshund that I took to Petco for beginner training. (I had to take him to a doxie rescue because he was too large for me to handle. He was adopted by a family that had other doxies and he fit in like a glove with that group). I guess I was fortunate that none of the dogs in that group were over 30#. The area was larger and it was possible for the dogs to socialize. The trainer made sure we knew exactly what we were supposed to do when we went out into the store for training. She spent very little time talking and actually having us interact with our dogs. I chose PetSmart this time because I had heard so many good things about the training program there. I know a lot of the success of the program depends on the trainer. Fortunately I had experience with my doxie in the beginner training to be able to work on my own during the week. Only time will tell. |

| The trainer is so important. I'm not really sure about this one but my aim is to go on to the Intermediate and then Advanced classes. If these big dogs don't pass the Beginner class then I won't be seeing them in the Intermediate. I think I'll be okay with doing this basic training (sometimes on my own experience) and will just "bit the bullet" and continue. Thanks for all your replies.l |
