| New puppy help I brought home my first yorkie puppy two days ago. She is 8 weeks old and freaks out if I leave her alone for even a second. I have her set up with a crate that she sleeps in at night and is sleeping in now with the door open. But if I close the door she freaks out and starts biting it horribly. I have the kitchen and laundry room sectioned off with a baby gate and she chews that as well. Any advice on how to keep her from howling and barking when I try to leave and to not bite the bars of the crate and gate? She sleeps in the crate at night just fine but I am right there. Thanks! |

| She should still be with mom for another month so this is a tough transition for her. She goes from being with her siblings and mom all the time to none of them. I would be careful leaving her alone to much right now encase her sugar were to drop. Puppies have to get used to all this new stuff so at night put her crate where she can see you. Take her potty before bed and then let her cry if she wakes ups and crys take her potty and put her right back. It could take a few weeks but at night and when you can't watch her confinement is safest. You could put something with your scent on it with her like a blanket or shirt. They make these little dogs that have heart beats the you can buy on amazon or at petsmart and they work great. Like I said everything is new to pups and the only way for them to touch every thing is with there mouth. Make sure she has lots of chew toys, and you can say no when she chews something she is not supposed to and then redirect her to the toy. Puppies are like having new born babies.

| I didn't know she was supposed to be with her mom for another month. I feel terrible. I hope I didn't screw her up. So I guess I shouldn't even plan on leaving her for even an hour then? Thank you for the advice. I keep her crate next to me at night and she does well. I have tons of toys, etc. She is not eating very well but I attributed that to her new surroundings. I had to get her some chicken. She demolished it and wanted more! |

| A close friend of mine has my yorkie's older sister (she is 2) and I have been having her over. She's not a big fan of my puppy but I hope that changes. I see them a lot and I hope these two can be friends. How long before she will stop wailing and barking when I leave the room? I ordered the heartbeat dog and I hope that changes things. I guess I'm looking for some light at the end of this tunnel. My family keeps reminding me that I've only had her for two days but it's hard to be rational when she gets SOOOOO upset. I really really appreciate your comments and your help. I was in tears this morning. I just hope I didn't make a big mistake. 😳😢 |

| It does get better but you have to be patience, persistent and consistent. They will catch on but you have to guide them. There are plenty of people on here with excellent tips. Your puppy is still very young but all hope is not lost. When I got my first yorkie I was beyond frustration. She was a rescue with some behavioral problems due to being caged and used only for breeding. Her potty habits were atrocious and it seemed no matter what I did, she was not catching on. I found this site and they give me tips on how to rehab a rescue and those tips worked for me. I had to do a kind of trial and error until I found a training method that worked for her. I also got a webcam so I could monitor her behavior and make any needed corrections in training methods. It seemed like a lot of work but it was worth it. She was eventually able to get run of the house. The most important thing I did was to be patient....did not get upset for her accidents (extremely important as they can pick up on your emotions), just cleaned it up, persistent.......i did the same thing and I did the same thing consistently. Guess what? She caught on and never had an accident in the house again. It's funny because it wasn't my dog that needed training.....I needed to learn how to train my baby and the same goes for you. There are excellent posts that you can get a lot of info from so just know you are not alone. Last edited by yavenay; 06-15-2017 at 05:28 AM. |

You can try something like this https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Pet-Lov...beat+puppy+toy or music https://www.amazon.com/Through-Dogs-...ds=puppy+music When you do leave during the day, use the gated area with a bed, blanket, her lovey, food, water. You can use dog fencing to make a smaller area. Don't shut the door! Give her a treat, tell her you'll be back soon and confidently leave. When you return, as soon as she quits barking (ignore during the barking) greet her enthusiastically, take her to her pee pad, reward her for success. It takes time. Congratulations on your new pup!

| Thank you everyone for the encouragement and advice. Yes, finding this site has been a HUGE relief! I ordered the heartbeat puppy and it will arrive tomorrow. I let her cry in the kitchen for about 40 minutes this morning while I got ready. She is now out cold. I am going to leave this afternoon for the first time and leave her here in her area. I have it exactly set up as everyone has suggested. The biggest concerns are: I live in an apartment and I fear the neighbors will complain because of the noise, and she bites the gate I have up with such tenacity that I'm afraid she is going to damage her little teeth. I've seen on here the plexiglass idea and that will be my next move today. But any other suggestions are welcome. I've always heard how smart these dogs are...I am hoping she will catch on and limit her barking when I leave. IF and when that happens, you all will hear the cries of joy from Indiana!! Another question for the experts: she did not eat for a day and a half and I got worried. I got her some chicken and she loved it. Tried mixing it with her food this morning and she refused to eat it but ate the regular chicken pieces up. Suggestions on food for her? I have IAMS smart puppy right now (hard and soft food both) |

We used the food the breeder was using, Taste of the Wild puppy. You can soften the food with warm water in case it's too hard. We held and fed our new puppy out of our hands for the first couple of days because she felt a little insecure. We pretended to eat some kibble, too We use bottled spring water at the advice of the breeder (confirmed in the forum too). It took us a couple of tries to find the right bowls. Our pup was tiny too and she didn't like to have a tall bowl. I believe the hand feeding and eating "together" had the biggest impact.

If she will not eat kibble or wet food, you can do home cooking, but if you do home cooking, you need to be in contact with a veterinary nutritionist who can design a nutritionally complete diet. They have veterinary nutritionists at www.balanceit.com . And of course, stay in close contact with your vet until the feeding issues are resolved. Good luck!

I just took the puppy in the bathroom with me and she'd settle down. Also, being a rental owner I would urge you to give your pup an area where nothing can be chewed like a door jam, a door, baseboards, carpet. We finally had to go to a no-pet policy because we could not afford the thousands of dollars of damage done by pets who were shut in rooms behind closed doors. Building materials change and carpets fade so you can't just replace one door jam, a piece of nice carpet, etc. Also, with potty training, try to leave your pup on an area that is waterproof so that urine or poop can't soak into the finish of the floor. When these things soak in it often involves tearing up a whole floor, replacing subfloor, and refinishing. We love pets and responsible pet owners. So, help all owners and pet lovers by doing your best to protect your apartment. There is no pet deposit and extra cleaning fee large enough to cover the damage that some pets cause and insurance will not cover pet damage.

| So the vet called with her stool sample results. She was positive for a parasite that was passed down from her mom. It usually lies dormant, but with the stress of leaving her litter they believe that she had a flare up. They gave me something for her to take to "treat" the parasite (she will always have it, but it won't necessarily affect her all the time) and I am to give her that Nutri-Cal stuff for the next week. She took a dose of each while at the vet and I swear 30 minutes later she is a new dog! Tons of energy, came home and ate some chicken right away (I will now start to incorporate the dog food), played and was showing the personality I know she has. I don't want her to have the parasite, but I'm so happy that she is acting normal. I think that's why there was the weird whining for no reason as well. I know she will go bananas when I leave, and I just have to work past that, but I feel a LOT better now that she's does Thank you so much for the replies and advice. And yes, I am meticulous with my apartment. No damages at all...mostly because I fix whatever is broken. The good news is that they are renovating each apt as people move out so I also know that this carpet and flooring is out when I am. Thank you again. Now, tomorrow when she screams and wails I will be a mess again. But that's tomorrow |
