| Hello... Hi I'm new to this and not sure if I'm doing this right....... I have 2 little babies 5ish year old buddy and 15 week old Betty. Buddy's owner sadly passed away and came 2 live with us 3 years ago he made me fall in love with the breed instantly and has become my shadow. We sadly lost his jack Russell house mate at 18 yrs old and along came Betty..... Betty moved in at 10 weeks old and after two 500 mile trips to introduce her to her new "brother" and they couldn't of got on better they are always together we tried crate trying Betty from day 1 but they both cried unless they were cuddled up together...which I loved. It's never been my intention to breed buddy and betty Although Betty came with documents going back 10 generations and came from a reputable breeder buddy didn't and since having Betty and the vet saying she's a well bread yorkie I'm realising that buddy isn't so I definatly do not want any accidents. The vet recommended spaying before first heat but others have said no....I don't know what to do...have looked in to dog nappies for her season but that's not going to keep buddy away! Any advice would be greatly appreciated |

| Definitely don't trust dog diapers to prevent pregnancy. The rule is two closed doors between them for 3 to 4 weeks. It really is very difficult and stressful in a home situation to keep them separated. Due to overpopulation and mass euthanasia in shelters, in the U.S. everyone advocates spaying before the first heat since that is the only effective time to prevent mammary cancer and prevents any accidental breedings. Getting the male neutered is an easier operation and could be an option for you since he is older. There is a lot of literature out there on the harm of spaying/neutering early. There is a lot of talk about performing vasectomies and tubal ligations rather than the current testical removal and ovariohysterectomy on dogs. Its common sense that we/they needs these hormones, but even after researching the subject I am not sure where I stand on the issue. Here is one link. Just do a search "is early spay neuter harmful to dogs" and many will come up and you can try to make an informed decision on what is right for you and your dogs. Don't Make This Mistake When Scheduling Your Dog's Neutering Procedure |

| Breeding Betty? I got the impression since you mentioned Betty's strong bloodlines that you think you may breed her? If that is your intention, you might consider neutering your boy so you neither have to separate them for weeks nor spay Betty. We thought we might breed our little girl, but after 1 heat and some research we realized even with mentoring from our breeder that we were not qualified or able time-wise to breed even 1 litter. |

| Buddy needs to be neutered and you can do that now. I also would spay before the first heat that is what's best. Diapers do not keep dogs from matting.

| I'm curious to know what the 'others' have told you as reasons not to spay her? If you have no intentions of breeding and only want them as pets, then I'd definitely spay her before the first heat.
