| intense fear of thunder My little munchkin, Kaycee, has an intense fear of thunder. Has anyone found anything that calms this besides sedatives? TIA |

| Thunder Storms So glad you found a way to soothe your baby with the cocoon of blankets. Whatever works is what to do.

| I tried everything -- Thundershirts, calming treats, Rescue Remedy, calming sprays, etc etc... nothing helped. We spoke in length to vet about anxiety and she was comfortable prescribing Trazadone (which is not a sedative) but it allows him to have less anxiety. It really works well for us. We tried xanax prior and it did not really do anything. Our vet said she sees better results with Trazadone. It doesn't make him zombie-like or sedate, it just takes the edge off. He still gets nervous during loud thunder but he no longer pants heavily, paces all over the place, shakes, etc. Now he usually finds a place to go lay like under the bed or in the bathroom and is less anxious. Oh I also keep the TV loud either with something I am watching or classical music.

We started with the Thundershirt for Teddy and it helped. Teddy decided that a comforter and pillow on the couch is his safe place. We bought him his own set. I'm not sure if the heavy wood arms of our family room couch also help. Something about wood seems to be comforting because he also likes going in the corner of the kitchen cabinets. I've also talked to another YT member who said that her dog is comforted by her wood flooring. The wood might block static. I've read that is why dogs like our previous Airedale find comfort from lightning/storms by hiding in cast iron bathtubs -- they block static. Save

| Don't have any research on this, but I have a friend who got a storm CD and played it for a few minutes every day, using treats and toys and immersion to get their pup used to the loud noise and thunder sounds. I think she ordered the CD from somewhere on the internet.
