| New pup crying at night....can this stress cause sickness? Hi all! I am new here, and just brought our baby girl home on Saturday. She is 18 weeks and very tiny, 1.12 ounces. The first night, I slept in the room with her and had her in her playpen with her bed and she did great. Only whimpered a couple of times. Last night, however....she cried and cried for about an hour before I took her out and allowed her to sleep in bed with me. I was so worried she might stress herself out and get low blood sugar or diarrhea? She hasn't been eating her dry kibble since she arrived at my house, and will only take wet food right now. Her breeder suggested I offer the wet if she was refusing the dry (which is what she was eating fine before I got her). I know its just the stress of settling in I'm sure, but all of this had me so worried I just couldn't take the crying. My question is, is it safe to let her "cry herself to sleep"? Or should I allow her to just sleep with me? I know she will have to get used to her play pen when I am out doing errands etc. and she has to stay alone. I am just wanting to make the best decision possible. Any advice is appreciated! |

| Poor baby. I would definitely let her sleep with you. You can crate train after she has adjusted.

| The crate or play pen is much safer for her until she is potty train and won't get into stuff. You have to let them cry it out. With all my pups i would take them potty then put them to bed if they woke up crying I would take them potty the. Put them back. They get used to it and generally will not make them selves sick. They need to be used to a crate incase they stay at the vet or groomer.

| We've had our fur baby (our first!) home for just a week and a half. We did the "cry it out." It was hard the first few nights, then he slept (or was at least quiet) for the entire night starting Night 3. We have a crate with an open door inside a larger pen, so he can get out in the middle of the night and relieve himself on the puppy pads (which he does!!!!) The crate has his soft bed, a baby receiving blanket that I slept with for a week before he came home, and a small stuffed toy. We got him at 13 weeks. Before he goes to bed, we have a half hour of "cuddle time" in a dimly-lit room with his head against my heart so he can hear it beat, then we place him gently in his bed. He learned "sit" almost immediately, so he is not allowed to get out of his pen in the AM until he's sitting pretty and quietly. This helps him learn how to self-soothe. There are no "perfect" solutions: we all just try and do the best we can, with a lot of love.... Last edited by mrssabes; 04-25-2017 at 06:02 AM. |

YT 500 Club Member | I will NOT let my baby cry himself to sleep. When we brought our baby home @ 10 weeks we made a game with his crate. All day long! Hey, he liked it. He would go in on his own & I would close the door just a little. Several hours later I would close & lock the door. Ok, not so bad. So that 1st night we played so hard I knew he would sleep like a baby in his crate, that I put beside my bed. Well, as soon as the light was out, here he went. Didn't know such a tiny little thing could be so LOUD! I couldn't stand it. I put the crate in my bed, with him securely in it. I put my fingers through the holes in the door, talked softly to him and we both slept like a baby till potty time. Outside in the middle of the night, then back in crate in bed. We did this for about a month, till he was big enough to sleep out in my bed without worrying I would hurt him. 2 years later he loves his crate and goes in & out of it when he wants. You must create a safe place for your baby. Good luck.

| Will you have her sleep in the pen or in bed when she's grown? I always had Monroe in bed with me and she never had an accident; she learned to hold it sleeping in bed, just like all the dogs I crate trained previously. I would probably let her sleep with you at this point and put her in the pen during the day for longer & longer periods of time. She can cry it out for shorter periods but I wouldn't want to make her do it all night long... Go with your gut! Eventually she'll get used to the pen and most likely love it like every dog I know who's used a pen or crate. |

| Barney had a bag like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Luck...g+bag+for+dogs that we kept him in during night in our bed. We called it his sleeping bag. This way we didn't have to worry about him falling off the bed. I would put my hand against the mesh for him when he would whine. His crate was too large to go on our bed. But if yours is smaller that would work too.

| 18 weeks is not to young to sleep in bed, i do think that it does help to have them in a protected space. We keep a small pet bed with rolled sides on our bed and Lola sleeps in that all night long placed on our bed on top of the covers between my husband and I a little bit below where our knees are. This way we always know where she is, and i guess we are lucky since she almost never gets out of her bed

| Thank you all for the replies! She has had a better last couple of nights! I let her sleep in her play pen in my room the last two nights and while she has cried some, she's done better. My only hesitation about her sleeping in bed at this point is that she is so tiny (1.12 ounce at 19 weeks ) I am so petrified of her falling off the bed on accident . I literally get no sleep because I sleep with my arms around her to protect her . lol. I would just die if she fell off and got hurt But, with that said..I wake up around 5 am and put her in bed with my anyways and let her snuggle for another hour. The only real reason I wanted her to get used to the play pen set up early on is so that when I have to leave for a few hours at a time on the weekends , she wouldn't be scared alone. |

| Sorry, yes. 1 pound 12 ounces. That is a great idea, I hadn't thought of keeping her on the night stand that way. That's awesome that she is trained to do her night time routine now that way! Thank you for the help! |
