| New Member to this Forum/Any suggestions on house training??? I just wanted to say hello to everyone and say that we are getting our new yorkie puppy in 4 days! I have been doing lots of reading on how to house train a puppy at his age. We have had a yorkie before but we didn't get him until 14 weeks of age so we missed the "puppy" stage with him. I would love to hear from anyone that has any suggestions for house training him! We are soooo excited about getting our new puppy and can't wait for Sunday to get here! Thanks in advance for any advice you have about this or anything else!!! |

| Let me start by saying I am not a yorkie expert, but I've House trained my dogs through the years. I dedicate the first week or more if needed to training a new dog. I watch carefully if out of the crate to any sign of having to void. During daytime hours I take the new dog outside every two hours for several days, then when successful go to three hours etc. while the dog is peeing or pooping, I use a phrase every time. I use "do it. Do it." Any words you choose will work, but not ones you say in pattern in the house. I say this every time for weeks. Believe it or not, eventually the dog will go on command. Mine all do and ,boy, is that great on rainy days or when traveling. Mine are all therapy dogs so I use the command before entering the hospital or facility. I was trained, I guess, too. Only my mom turned on the faucet in the bathroom. Good luck with your new puppy. Consistency is the secret to all successful training, I believe. Gew |

| Welcome to YT! Very excited for you to get your puppy this weekend! I also took time off work to dedicate my first week with Scottie when I brought him home at 5 months (or 20 weeks). The method I chose was crate training and I did the whole take him outside every 2-3 hours and praising him like mad when he went potty outside. By the end of the week, he was starting to get the hang of it and I was able to extend his potty break to every 3-4 hours. When I went back to work, I had someone walk him during the day so that he got a potty break every 4-5 hours. During the night, my Scottie refused to sleep. He slept in his crate next to my bed. Make sure you let your puppy potty before going to bed, take away water around 8pm, and just hope he sleeps through the night. If he wakes up whining, you gotta take him to his potty area. I had many sleepless nights the first...couple months. I made sure to watch him like a hawk when it was the hour before his scheduled potty time to make sure he had no accidents. When I couldn't watch him, he'd either go back in his crate or I'd tether him to me. I had a strict feeding and potty schedule that I stuck to. I always say "good boy poo/pee" when he goes (even to this day at 3 years old). Celebrate when he potties where you want him to. And don't ever punish him for accidents (except if you catch him in the act, then you can give a firm "NO!"). And definitely, consistency is key! By the way, at 14 weeks, they're still very much a puppy!
