| Calws Question???? Ok my little Lucy has 4 claws in the front and 5 claws in the back. I know every one talks about puppys having their dew claws takin' out when their small. So are the dew claws in the front since she only has 4 claws in the front??? Sorry I don't know much about dogs... Everything I know I've learned on here.... The reason I'm asking is becase it's seems that her back claws are getting stuck in the carpet alot. And I heard that's what happens when their dew claws are not takin' out. It could just simply be that the grommers did not trim enough off her claws.... Would love any input. Thanks. Crystal |

| Hi, I'm not sure about the dew claws, Princess had hers taken out before I got her. As far as your carpet, I bet she needs to have a nail trim. Maybe if you take her back to the Groomers that will help. Princess always needs a trim, her hair & nails grow really fast.

| Dew claws are the ones that are higher up on the leg. If Lucy's nails are getting caught in the carpet, you should probably have them trimmed.

| Dew claws are in the front 2 paws. My girls both have their dew claws and as long as their trimed properly and your careful when you put clothes on them, it's fine. They should have 4 claws on each paw in the back. I have no clue why your's has five Is it like an extra toe or is the fifth claw in the same place as a dew claw would be?

| Dew claws can be on the front and back paws. They are either born with them or not... It's like our "thumb". I have all my pups dew claws removed around 3 days old (I just had them done on my Lucy's pups today).... so as not to cause problems in the future. Some of my yorkies still have their dew claws... they were still on when I purchased them.....until such time as they cause problems... they will keep them... it's surgery when they yorkies are older and have them removed... not just "snip" when they are newborns. Could be yours just have long nails all over... time for a trim!!

| Yes, it sounds like she still has her rear dew claws and imo that is a good thing. It helps them to run better and get better traction. I would make sure you keep them trimmed up but other than that I would just leave them alone. |

| mine still has his dewclaws in the front and no dewclaws in the back. the front dewclaws are about 1.5" or so up the leg from the other claws, hidden amongst masses of hair. maybe it's the way he plays, but he often snags it on stuff: towels, carpet, sweaters, etc. i'm partial to having it removed the same time as his neutering this coming monday. but i have until day of to make that final decision. |

| Well if all five claws are in a row then your dog has an extra claw (kinda like people with an extra toe). Dew claws are higher up on the leg.
