| predicting muzzle length??? I don't care if I get a tiny yorkie, a 12 pounder, one with short legs, one with long, etc.... But I'll confess, I DO prefer the ones with the shorter noses! When I pick out a puppy, is there any way to predict what the muzzle length might be in adulthood? Like, I dunno...a rule of thumb, of sorts? Or is it, like weight, ultimately relative to other factors such as skeletal structure, and hair thickness, etc.? (someone else asked something like this on another thread, and I didn't ever see it answered, so I'm asking again! thanks!) |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | You can judge by looking at the parents. The shorter the nose in a pup, the shorter the adult. Longer nose in a pup, will be longer in an adult.

| You should look to the parents and grandparents to predict the muzzle length. If you have pics...thats a plus! If not, then you will have to base it on the length as a pup. |

| OK, um, at the risk of sounding REALLY stupid--I'm terrible at judging this sort of stuff visually. Like, I never can tell what size bowl I need to get down, to put the leftovers in! Can someone give me an idea, in actual measurements, of what might be considered an small/average/long nose in, let's just say, 10 week old puppies? |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I don't have pictures of puppies being 10 weeks, but here's a pup of mine that was taken at 2 1/2 to 3 weeks that will have a short nose. Pup is 7 weeks old now and still has a short nose.

| I think you can tell pretty good just by looking at the pup. My Lucy 1 I could tell was going to have a short nose... And with my Lucy Too I can definatly tell she is going to have a long snout. She has the more terrier look about her. |

| We've got two boys from the same litter and one has a long nose and the other a short one. One looks just like his mom and the other just like his dad. Here are some pictures of them at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and fully grown. We could tell the difference when we picked them out at 6 weeks, but it became quite a bit easier to tell in the following weeks, so you shouldn't have any trouble with picking a short snout at 10 weeks or so. One thing I would warn you about - the shorter snout dogs can be more prone to respiratory ailments. We had some trouble with both of them developing some sort of kennel cough like sickness shortly after we got them, and the vet said it would take the short snouted one a lot longer to get over it just due to the shape of his nose (and it did - about a month longer). Just something to be aware of. But I agree - the short noses are pretty cute! The first picture is the short nose dog at 6 weeks. The second picture is the long nose dog at 6 weeks. The third picture is taken at 12 weeks, the one on the left has the long nose. In the last picture, the one on the left has the short nose. Hope that helps a little.

| I like the shorter noses too. My Jewels has a short nose. Chachis is longer but not real long.

| Chanel has a short nose compared to Chelsey, and Chelsey doesnt have a long snout either. Chanel is smaller and has a finer build.
