| Hi from Newbie! Hello everyone! I'm so glad to have found this forum My husband and I adopted a 5 year old (as best as they could tell) yorkie/silky terrier mix from our local shelter 3 weeks ago. He had just been neutered and had 3 teeth extracted about three days before we brought him home. Everything is very new to him and we want him to be a happy, healthy pup. He is trained to go outside and really only had one or two accidents since we brought him home. He does not seem to "know" how to play. I have purchased a wide range of toys, but he doesn't want any of them right now. Is it best to just keep offering the different toys? My husband and I play with the toys, with the hopes that he will join in one of these times. He has a few stuffed toys (different textures/materials) ,mini tennis balls, a kong, mini bully stick and some the rubbery-type toys. I did order a puzzle toy from hm, after reading some of the suggestions on here. If you've read this far, thank you! And, if you have any suggestions as to how I can encourage him to play, I would appreciate it. Thanks everyone! |

| Welcome to YT and congrats on your new addition. 3 years ago I adopted a 2 1/2 yo boy, a surrender, who also did not know how to play with toys. Not knowing what he would like I bought a LARGE variety of all types of toys and BALLS, all my now passed girls LOVED balls. It took him months to finally play with anything, and the ball lol, he wouldn't go near it, I NEVER saw a dog that didn't like a ball. Bully stick, cow hoof he had NEVER had anything like this to chew and showed a slight sign of aggression, afraid I was going to take it away. With rescues it may be a long process, weeks, for them to adjust to his new human family, surroundings, smells, schedules, LOVE and ATTENTION. He has to gain trust with his new human family and bond with you. Keep the toys out, keep playing encouraging him to play. He will come around. When he does play praise like crazy, and treat rewards are great. Praise to show playing is a good thing. Rescues, you may never know what his past was like, he may never had, had a toy and doesn't know what to do with it, that's why it is important to praise when that time comes and he picks up a toy to play, praise shows it's a GOOD thing. He will come around. I now have a beast that FLINGS ALL his toys around, I'm waiting for him to knock a lamp over or crack the TV lol. Patience, love and praise. Please keep up updated. AND thank you for rescuing.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | There are different ways of playing. You two could sit on the floor and roll the ball back n forth between you. Have some treats ready by your side and if he follows ball to either of you reward him. Do you have a Kong you could put peanut butter around the opening. That might entice him to interact with Kong. There is the game search out that precious toy, once you find it ooh n aww over it as if it was the most pleasant thing to get. Again sit on floor with your toy box and make a great fuss over finding that toy.

| Thanks! For the suggestions! Yep, I have tried peanut butter in the Kong...he just doesn't do anything with it. I pretended to lick it, and he did give it one lick after that, lol. We will go at his pace. My husband and I roll the ball every night. One of these times, he will play...or maybe he won't. That's ok too. I just want to give him every opportunity possible..... |
