| Teapot size yorkie question My vet is upset with me on Max's weight. He weighed 4.5 lbs in early sept.(3 mo) -6 weeks later, weighed 6 lbs. a month later he's 7.5 lbs. he said he has no waist! ( was yelling it) said i have to limit his food but I figure exercise is easier because three dogs that free feed would be hard to figure if he's getting enough. I think he's upset because of his frame size. So everyone with teapot size yorkies are they taller and longer? When I make max jackets or clothes he's a small for length but his waist is a biiiitttttt bigger. Maybe he's taking after me? I gave him a bath between groomers appt. and I see what they mean. No waist... no curves. I'm thinking these 15 lb Yorkies have got to be more my shiz tzu size dog? |

| My now passed girl was 17 pounds, NO FAT,she was a tall girl with a beautiful sleek body. My adopted boy is 12 pounds, he is a tall boy, NO FAT. I would STOP the free feeding now that your puppy is 7 months old, put them all on a schedule, feed same time every morning, fed same time every night . Each should have their own separate bowl and watch them to make sure they only eat from their bowl and not steal from the others. I feed my boy at 6:30AM and again at 4:30PM. I split their recommend daily amount of food in half, so he gets 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night. At 8PM he gets a small treat AFTER he goes through ALL his command and tricks. Now that winter is here outside romps in not an option and he has gained a bit of weight and lost his waist, soooo, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, in the morning he gets 1/4 cup kibble and 1/4 cup green beans and his waist line is back. Green beans is a filler with no calories. Cody gets NO table food, at times I will give him a small bit of carrot, or a small bit of cooked potato, or fruit that is in season. For a yorkie Cody is NOT a small dog, but small to me lol. With these little guys we have to watch their weight, a over weight dog can get end up with leg and heart problems from being too heavy.

| I have two rough collies and there is very little emphasis on weight. I never free feed. I measure all their food. They are only allowed to eat from his/her own bowls. No human food except a piece of carrot or broccoli every blue moon. If collies get too heavy, they can become arthritic. Collies run, chase, run. Mine are therapy dogs and do agility. The emphasis on weight of yorkies to me is amazing. I just adopted a 10 year old Yorkie. He is very short, almost looks like a mini bull dog. However, he is 7.1 pounds. The doctor says he's perfect but the rescue foster mom says he is two pounds overweight. With collies feeling the ribs and backbone are two tests as well as the tight tummy. I can feel his ribs easily as well as his backbone, but not sure he has a waist. He needed bladder stone surgery two weeks after I got him ( the surgery was three weeks ago) so he has a special diet of 1/4 c 2x per day of Royal Canine Veterinary SO food. I was warned that he is to get nothing but this, so risk more stones Only at 2:30 pm he gets a tiny wrap for the Denamarin he needs. We bought him a slow bowl because he is so hungry. He starts circling the island on which I make the dogs' dishes a half hour early. Should he really get less? Oh ,yes, he can now run the fenced in yard supervised. He jogs really fast after the collies. He can't go as long or far, but ,hey, he is ten and his legs two inches. I know so little about yorkies. He's a doll! |

| If he has to lose weight try cutting down his morning meal give half the vet food and the rest frozen green beans (french cut). Being he is a small dog I would give him the green beans twice a week, say Monday and Friday. I give Cody the green beans ONLY in the morning because frozen beans has a lot of water in it and Cody has to pee more often. Try giving your pup green bean twice a week, after a month weigh him to see if there is any weight loss. I am not sure what a monthly safe weight loss is, but I do know it has to be gradual. I put up a thread asking what was a safe weight loss but received no response. I feel 1/2 a pound month for my boy is a safe monthly loss. Depending on your pup's weight maybe 1/4 per month is safe.

To the op, you can't base a healthy weight on the term "teapot". Rather, you should base healthy weight of the frame of the dog. If yours has no waist, then it definitely needs to get more exercise and be fed less food. Definitely get him on a schedule and measure out recommended daily amounts.

| Sorry, I don't have an answer for that. Call your vet to see if feeding your pup frozen green cut beans is ok since he's had surgery. Please keep us posted.

| Is your vet saying a 7 month old puppy is fat? He sounds like he is growing to me but maybe I am wrong. Very rare for a puppy to be truly fat. Jackson weighed 6lbs at 12 weeks old. He was 12lbs by 7 months old. He's 8yrs old now and weighs 18lbs. He's not fat though. Here is a photo of his body condition last winter. Now of course he is atypical for a Yorkie. The standard is 7lbs or less however sometimes that just doesn't happen.... whether it's bad breeding, just random, etc... weight doesn't necessarily mean fat. So maybe your vet just isn't used to seeing a bigger Yorkie. I would have to see a pic to judge.

| I'm not an expert. But if your vet said he can't see your dog's waist, then he's definitely overweight. You should do what he says. Teapot I think is a dog that exceeds the standard weight of the breed but not because it's fat but mostly because of the height, lenght, not because is necessarily fat. I agree with the comment that usually puppies are never fat, but I've seen it all hehe. But I'm sure your dog is beautiful and healthy. Just check the amount of food you give him. He'll be fine. This is Ela my teapot. 8 months old, 7.5 lbs. she's skinny and tall.

| I think the vets issue was the weight he's gained in such a short time. He used to be active like a Tasmanian devil...but his sisters are older and sleep all day so he's gotten used to just curling up with them to sleep all day. Guess he's not a teapot because he's short everywhere! After his bath I could tell this little head with this round roly poly body so I'm putting up the bowl of food in the afternoon, NO cat food snacks (vet said to put up their food so he couldn't get to it) couple cheerios as snacks and got him a ifetch. Running him twice a day chasing that ball! Hopefully that will slim him down or at least stop the rapid weight gain until his growing stops at maturity. |

| Not good at getting pics resized but here is Max...he is modeling my harnesses for pictures for our next show. He knows they are to girly for him but he's willing to overlook that for a cheerio. He says don't judge his hairdo..he was trying on harnesses and doing a photo shoot for a hour so looks a little mussed up....you can see his frame size. Should be a smaller dog not a fat dog. I didn't call him fat out loud did I? Last edited by Cats307; 01-31-2017 at 11:06 PM. |

Caleb and Pip are both teapots. Pip is sleek, long body, long legs. She's more active than her buddy. Caleb is more deceptive. He's not quite as long or tall as Pip, and he is prone to getting over weight, we have to watch him and cut his food when needed. He's a little piglet and hubby has been in trouble a few times for giving him extras. Your little one perhaps needs to be unable to free feed, which might be difficult with other dogs around. More play, may help but as it's a puppy that can be over done. I always think of Winnie the pooh when seeing a rotund yorkie.
