| Ear Infections Good Morning! Levi my Yorkie gets ear infections in one ear only, we have meds for it. I suggested to hubby that we should maybe start cleaning his ears out in between hair cuts. (They clean them out). Should we use just the long cotton Q tip from a vet with nothing on it? Anyone have problems with this and what do you do. |

| Do not put anything in the ear canal, deep inside the ear. You can cause more problems and possibly permanent damage. One of my boys has ear drops right now. Our first ear infection. He is prone to getting water in his ears during his bath. I haven't been doing as good a job of making sure his ears are dry. Moisture leads to growth of yeast and bacteria, then infection. We usually use Vet Solutions ear cleaner. It has a drying agent that is good for after baths and swimming. Excessive hair in the ear can also contribute to infection. Some Yorkies do better with all of the hair removed, some are better off with a little hair left. Sometimes aggressive hair removal can contribute to infection. Diet is another consideration. If your pup is prone to frequent ear infections, a diet change might help.

| More info about ear hair: excessive hair can trap wax and dirt, and prevent good air flow that keeps the ear healthy. A little ear hair can help prevent dirt settling in the ear for some pups. There have been threads on Yorkie Talk about some pups suffering ear infections after aggressive hair removal, usually at a groomer. Maybe the pulling and plucking leads to open sores more susceptible to infection? I've come to the conclusion that each pup is different. Some need every last hair removed, others require a little. I use a flea comb to comb the ear daily, keep it clean and free from ear wax. I use the Vet Solutions ear cleaner after a bath, and the hair dryer. Make sure to keep the hair dryer moving and not held too close to the ear to prevent burning. I grew lax in drying Teddy's ears and I believe that is why he developed the infection. That and we haven't had as much outdoor time because of the weather. As I mentioned above, sometimes diet is a factor. Other members will have to comment on that. I think it is grains that sometimes cause certain dogs problems. You definitely do not want to stick qtips inside the ear canal, just like you wouldn't want to do it with a human ear. That can push down hair and potentially damage the inner ear. One member here had to take her pup to the ER because part of the qtip broke off inside the ear.

| Thank you for all the information. We did have all the hair cut off the tips of his ear, his lazy ear now stands up. His lazy ear is the one that gets infected all the time. I think that will help. I'll look for that solution at the vet clinic, Thanks |

| I've also read that adding a few drops of organic raw Apple Cider Vinegar daily to their water helps to fight yeast infections, along with other benefits. We have the brand called Bragg at home.

| You need a cleaner like epotic or something with a drying agent in it and you need your vet to show you how to clean the ears. Ears should be cleaned after baths or swimming and at least once a week if prone to ear issues. The dogs ear is shaped like an L so just using a qtip would just pack dirt and wax down in the ear and cause bigger issues!
