| Potty in colder climates I've been thinking of getting a dog, and would love it to be a Yorkie. However I live in Canada where the winters can be quite harsh. My concern is potty time. How would that work out in winter. Has anyone have experience with this? I can't imagine having to dress my dog every time they need to go potty. Would it be better to have doggy litter for the winter, and a spot outside to go in the summer. And would they be able to flip back and forth. How about always using a doggy litter instead. I mean we do it for cats, so why not dogs. Actually the whole idea of a dog going outside kinda annoys me. It's a bit amazing that in 2016 we still haven't come up with a better solution. Anyway, any thoughts on this matter? |

| Lexi is pad trained. Absolutely love it, she just goes on her little pee pads. As we live in Florida and have issues with poisonous frogs, eagles, hawks etc.. It sure makes life easier honestly. If its pouring rain don't have to worry either. Makes traveling easy too...staying in hotels just bring the pee pads with you and don't have to worry.

| I prefer my pup goes outdoors, it doesn't take long to throw a sweater / coat on him. Pee pads do have their advantages.

| My Cali is 100% potty pad trained probably because she was a show dog. This means no issues in snow, rain, or freezing weather! I use the disposable pads that I buy at Sams Club (the ones for humans, not dogs), but there are also washable pads that many use. I know many apartment dwellers also train to the potty pad. Good luck what ever you decide, you have lots of choices

Senior Yorkie Talker | Hi, I also live in Canada and know how you feel, I pee pad trained Chloe for those minus temps. in the winter, and it works very well, when it's warm enough outside she loves to go out. As you know it can be so cold thier feet can freeze very fast, sometimes as quick as it takes to find thier spot and go, and she does not like the snow. |

| We have pee pad trained Bella and Lily for the same reason Here in Barrie Ont. We can wake up to the deck full of snow and a dog with there legs crossed so pee pads it is . I think with pee pads they go more often. Costco is the best price I have found for them 19.99 for 120 of them sometime they go on sale for 15.99 that's when I buy several boxes. Love the hat were did you get it samma23 |

| Where to potty is the question Hi, I understand about not wanting your doggie to go outside in the cold and then there is the rain and bad weather. I am sure they must not like it either though some manage it quite well even the little ones. Mine has a ugodog potty box that has two parts to it. You can put newspapers or whatever you want in the lower part and then there are two grids that go on top with comfortable holes in them where the pee goes down into the bottom section. My dog is only 3.5 lbs so I am so glad I found this online and he never has had to go outside. Now they even sell linings for the box that fit completely and you can use them a few times and wash them out. I never got them as I can get all the paper I need for free. Watch those pennies. lol So this could be a choice if you wish. The site is called ugodog.net. Hope you find the solution that will work for you and your baby.

| We live in North Dakota with cold weather too. Max has been a trooper going outside. Even during the last storm that about blew him over! Even with snow and ice out there he goes outside and even stays longer than I can handle it. Hes just 6 mo old so not sure if you got a baby during winter how it would be. We got Emma in Feb and she hated going outside! took forever to train that one! |

Jokes (and half-truths) aside, I will say that dogs are creatures of habit. It will be a challenge to have them switch potty locations based on seasons, unless you take them to multiple locations throughout the year to get them used to it. I've looked up training dogs to use cat litter. The only thing is, dogs ...well, they want to chew up and eat anything. I didn't want to risk them eating the litter. If you are against outdoor potty, that's okay! There are potty pads, which many use. You can train them to potty indoors and then go out once a day for a nice walk for exercise. Problem solved! As an alternative to replacing potty pads, there are a lot of porch potty variations as well - but the challenge with those is the clean up. You have options. You just have to weigh out your preferences. Last comment - potty training a Yorkie really isn't easy (and can be quite frustrating at times). Scottie took over a year to be fully outdoor potty trained without accidents. Casie took about a year to potty on indoor pads (she unfortunately doesn't have the same holding capacity as Scottie). You'll have to keep an open mind and be very very patient - it may not work out the way you intended it to be (i.e. I wanted both mine to potty outdoors, but it couldn't work out that way. Casie also loves to eat her poop on the potty pad, so I have to watch her like a hawk). Though, it seems many members here have had their Yorkies potty trained after a couple months.
