| Agressive with puppies Hi, I have. 2 year old Yorkie. According to the breeder we boarded him with while on holidays last week, he's not dominant and gets along well with the adult Yorkies they had. However they found him agressive with the puppies. We've been offerred a male Yorkie pup from our neighbour in a few weeks. We know the mother dog well and want a companion for our dog. Winters are long and cold here and having a playmate could really help our dog stay healthy when he can't go on walks. And we've always wanted two dogs. We realize it could take months before the two dogs would be truly friendly and we have lots of puppy playpen fencing to keep them separate when we're not around -- though we're retired and home most of the time. Is the puppy something we should consider? Is it too dangerous? Are there things we should do to make things work? Thanks. Linda |

| Most older dogs are scared of puppies because of the nipping and pouncing in older dogs face. Under the circumstances your dog met puppies has to be taken into consideration, 1-he was in a strange place, 2-mom and dad not around 3- these were strange puppies jumping at him, sure he's going to be aggressive. I have had a pack of 3 yorkies, all females, all 3 years apart. When ever a new kid came home the older one / ones would stay on high grounds, the sofa. A new puppy coming into your house will have a different smell, not smell like a dog, your older one will stay away. He will watch the puppy from afar, maybe come to sniff him, when the puppy starts to hop and pounce in his face your older one will back off, make sure you have a safe haven for your older one to get away from the puppy. Do not force your older one to be friends, let him go to the puppy on his terms and his time. It may take 4 to 6 weeks before your older one will stay on the floor with the puppy. Do not rush the friendship. You say you are retired, that's perfect, you will be home to supervise and when you have to leave the two kids make sure the puppy is crated or separated from your older one. Is your older dog neutered? you want to get a male puppy, males must be neutered so they will not fight for dominancy. I think you will be just fine getting a puppy.

| Thanks, Joan! Yes, my Yorkie is neutered. I was a bit afraid he might see the pup as a squirrel to be hunted.... Linda |

| lol a squirrel that is too funny. No he won't think it's a squirrel, puppies have a different smell a baby smell not a dog smell, your older one will not know what it is and more then likely head for the sofa away from this lil critter. Good that he is neutered, so I won't have to mention that the puppy should be also when your vet tells you when. Once your older one see this kid is here to stay he'll be accepting. Evey thing depends on the individual dogs personality. My girls were sweet and loving babies, wonderful personalities. It will take time but I am sure they will be BFF.

| Hi, An interim update: We got the 11-week-old puppy on Saturday at noon and so far it's gone quite well. We put the puppy into his puppy pen and our 2-year-old came by with a waving tail and offers to play. We're being very careful and supervising the two whenever they're free together but so far it's going well. They're playing tug-a-war together and the older dog is showing off a toy and running with it, clearly expecting to be chased by the puppy (which is what happens) with some wild races occurring. We're being very careful to pay lots of attention to the 2-year-old and give him lots of treats. Linda |

| Congratulations on the new member to your family. I don't think things could have gone any better by the sound of things. It sounds like the new puppy is just what your other little guy needed.

We have had our new little one Rylee for only 11 days and our little princess Ruby Bella has been very distant. She hides from her most of the time. We are not trying to rush her, we have all the time in the world. We are keeping Rylee separated from her especially in the am when she is most active and playful.
