| Teeth Cleaning- anesthesia My vet recommended teeth cleaning for my 2 year 8 month old Yorkie. I was given the option of the type of anesthesia. 1) Isoflorane or 2) Propofol and sevoflurane($200 up charge). Does anyone have a recommendation? I don't even like the idea of anesthesia for teeth cleaning anyway. What I found searching on the web hasn't convinced me one way or the other and I am hoping someone here on the forum will have some input. 5 lb Yorkie- Sherman |

| Although I'm not sure which you should choose I just wanted to make you feel better. Anesthesia is perfectly safe when blood work is done before hand.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Honestly, as long as I had a skilled vet who was comfortable in both - I would go with either of these. Iso and Sevo are both great anesthetics. Sevo can allow the clinician to put deeper and/or go lighter in a rather quick manner, if ever needed. Sevo may clear from the body quicker, making recovery a bit quicker...but it may not even be *that* much more obviously quicker so it may not warrant the upcharge. If it were me and I had a very sick dog...I may then request Sevo. But if my kiddo was healthy and normal, I'd probably save the $200 and go w/ Iso.

| We use iso. Our vet has had dogs wake up on sevo during dentals. By the way, anesthesia is needed for a properly performed dental on an animal. I'm glad your vet recommended it. My Winston has to go every 7-8 months for a cleaning. My older dog was nearly 15 at her last dental. I don't sweat it if the vet knows what they're doing.

| Brush his teeth I tried all the rinses and expensive green stuff. I get good mouthwash toothpaste and a soft brush and brush his teeth. I went to the doctor after several years for cleaning because I noticed he had a build up of tartar. He said your dog has wonderful teeth and his gums are healthy no gingivitis I was so so happy. Try brushing with a soft tooth brush, its a evening chore but he wakes up with fresh breathe and no expensive bills. |

| I don't have a small Yorkie. I did not get an option, but I have never thought about it. My pets came out fine. Their upper body hurt for about a week. I think it hurt because of the equipment used during the cleaning. Last edited by JoshieBoy; 08-26-2016 at 12:11 AM. |
