| My Yorkie needs to lose weight :( My bigger Yorkie is 7 lbs (Almost 8 pounds). My vet told me he looks like "a little sausage" and that I need to get him down to 6 pounds. He's only a little over a year old. He doesn't really over eat. He's definitely not eating anything any different than my other Yorkie, who the vet said looks good (but he's tiny - 3 lbs). It's hard to monitor Exactly who is eating what because if I don't let them eat out of the same bowl my smaller Yorkie will not eat. Just from watching them it seems like the larger one only gets a tiny bit more than my other one which didn't really worry me because he is the larger one. They get the exact same amount of treats. The only thing I can think of why he's gaining weight while the other one isn't is that the other one runs around more while he lounges around more but it's not like he never runs around or plays. I'm not giving them more food than the recommended amount. Would it be ok to give him less than the recommended amount just until he gets down to 6? Any tips for getting my smaller one to eat without the other one just so I can monitor intake? He will just walk away and walk over to the bigger one's bowl and eat with him and then when they finish they'll both go over to the second bowl. |

| Dogs just like people have different metabolisms. And my dog was on a food with grains. He ate kirkland lamb or chicken for years and ate less than the recommended amount and he was over weight. While my jack russell was never over weight. The recommended amount is just a general suggestion. Many dogs do better in less. I changed my dogs to acana- which is higher in fat then their previous food but grain free. And low in carbs And so he has lost weight now and is a perfect weight. So you may want to talk to your vet about the food your feeding as well . In my house it would never work to feed them out of the same bowl. Maybe you can find something more enticing to get your smaller yorkie to eat. That way you can feed them seperatly, and monitor how much they eat better? |

| For treats you can try frozen string beans. It is really best if you can get them to eat out of their own bowls, this way you can cut back a bit on the bigger one, you can always feed him frozen string beans if he is still hungry. I had a pack of 3, I would line up all 3 bowls and they all ate from their own dish, this is how I trained them, they trained me that they MUST be together to eat lol.

| As Farleys indicated, different dogs have different metabolisms. My younger boy has a much faster metabolism than the older one. I also agree that you need to train them to eat out of separate dishes to better monitor intake. With my boys, I stood between them to keep the younger one out of the older one's bowl. A yummy enticement on top of the food for the younger one might help. He'll get used to the new arrangement if you enforce it. Dog foods usually recommend feeding more than is really required. I feed my boys less than the recommended amount. Plus, you have to factor in the treats for daily calorie intake. At one year of age, that is the time to cut back a little anyway on intake. Puppies usually need more food while they are growing.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | All dogs will have different metabolism, so size doesn't really dictate that part. Maybe try putting some Parmesan cheese on the little one's plate of food to entice him to that bowl while the other one eats..? And yes, you can def cut down on food for the older one. It will take some time for him to lose the weight. Even more importantly though, he *needs* to excercise / have activity...how about more walks...?

| They're both the same age (1 month apart) so they have been eating like this for a while, I'm really trying but this habit is so hard to break. When I picked up the little one the breeder told me he only ate with his sister/littermate so I think he's been doing this since the day he was born. I even tried putting a little chicken in the smaller one's dish but he still went to the other one's dish. I tried holding him while the other one ate and then put him down and picked up my bigger one and he would not eat. As far as walks, I'm trying to do longer/more frequent walks but he's lazy, he lays down after walking for 5-10 minutes. The little one would walk all day long if he could. The bigger one will definitely eat by himself. I'm just worried that my smaller one will starve. People have told me not to worry and that he will eat when he gets hungry enough but I'm not sure that he will... |

| Can you hold your bigger one next to the bowl, but not let him reach the food, but close enough to encourage the other to eat. i do think your little one will learn to eat from his own bowl, but it will take trying a few diff things. Or maybe put the bigger guy in a kennel and put the little ones food bowl right next to the kennel, so they are eating close to each other. I personally would try multiple things to make the food more enticing. Maybe a tiny bit of chicken stock, or try a little spoonful of different kinds of canned food and see which one he likes best. I think its in both of their best interests to feed seperetly. When the day comes that you may need to add medication to food it will be easier. Plus i like to know how much they are reall eating. Its important to keep track of stuff like that, so that you know when they arent eating like they shoul...etc. |

I'm thinking of maybe trying different feeding times and keeping the other away at that time. I'm hoping if I feed my smaller one late he'll be so hungry he'll just eat.

| I love it! The bigger one loves any and every dog he meets but the smaller one usually doesn't, he just loves his brother. But I was watching my friend's Yorkie over the weekend (who is the smaller one's real sister/littermate). And they BOTH loved her. They were trying to include her in everything, it was adorable lol. |

I guess it's going to be a battle of wills with my little one lol. He doesn't even like table scraps! The only dog I know that would turn his nose up at meat! I don't really give them anything from the table because the little one will actually beg and then when I would give in he would sniff it and walk away and the big one would eat both pieces lol. My boyfriend was like he's begging for his brother!

| How about a large plate or something big enough to put two piles on??? Then you can eventually do two smaller plates that are touching...???? Might be worth a shot? |

YT 500 Club Member | How so darn cute the little one has to eat with his best buddy. Cute, cute, cute. Can you maybe buy a bowl that has a divider in the middle. I would think it would have to be a little bigger than what you have. When one is finished pick him up and see if the other will still eat. Good luck.
