| Potty Training question for 11 wk old Have a question since all you went thru this at one time when yours was little...Max has been is very good lately about going potty outside (except someone didn't tell him my front door mat is the same as the lawn!) He won't whine he just comes and stares me down, then I ask if he needs to go potty and out we go...when he is done he plays with my toes or just comes to the door. I'm pleased with his progress...or is it my progress (haha) His problem is at night..when he was sleeping in our bed it was accident free but I finally have him use to a play yard at night. I put in his big blanket which fills the play yard so he thinks its his bed and they won't go in his bed(someone hasn't taught him this yet). But he wakes up at night and we take him out but maybe we don't catch him soon enough?? since he doesn't go potty when we have him outside. I wash the bedding in odor ban which should take out the smell of any pee if he is using his bedding. Question...should I get a smaller area for his bed? I don't want to crate him and a play yard is easy for him to see us at night and not feel confined. After 7am I can open up the door to the bathroom and he has the run of the bathroom and play yard so he has his breakfast in there while we get a extra few winks. He will be allowed to sleep with us once the other 2 dogs and 2 cats that are in our bed can tolerate him. But would a smaller area be better or just give him the run of the bathroom? |

| Is he trained to go on the pee pads???? Buddybear just tore them up so when he made noise I had to take him out at night. 11 weeks is to young to hold it all night.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | He probably can't make it thru the night yet so unless you want to get up, I'd instead leave a potty pad down (washable or disposable) for him in an area that just fits his bed, water, and pad.

| He goes out at least 2 times a night so I suspect he is using his bedding. So I thought maybe a smaller area at night might work better since he does go outside so good during the day. He was really good at night when he was in our bed too. We notice he does wake us at night but when we take him out he doesnt go potty?? Just baffling to me. |

| I would just put his bed in the crate with a potty pad covering the rest of the area. If he is drinking water at night he is naturally going to have to pee a lot during the night. Maybe buy him a small bed instead of the blanket. He is less likely to pee in his bed. Watch for the Lee pads with an attracting agent already in them. They are so helpful with training. He is still very young. It takes months of close watch and a strict routine to train a puppy. Small pups sometimes take longer. A pup 6 months old or older would not need the water at night but your guy is just a baby. Puppies have a muscle attached to the bladder that does not mature until they are around 16 weeks old. They can't hold back urine very well until that happens. I have always set up regular intervals to take the puppy out rather than waiting for them to ask. They are creatures of habit really. Once the routine is learned the dog will start reminding you if you are late. |

| Generally when potty training there crate should not be to big or they will potty in it. They normally will whine in the middle of the night when they need to go.

| Wow, I have been lucky with mine. My Yorkie is now 14 months old. The last couple of months he sleeps with me on top of the bed. We go to sleep at 8pm and wake at 4 am. At 4;30 am I take him off the bed and put him into his regular rooms three of which are wood where I have his pee pads (two of them) and he goes there. So far, knock on wood, there have been no accidents on my bed. He was always good at holding his bladder from day one when I got him at about 4 months of age. |

| last night he woke up at 2am to go potty(he's got the whining part down)...wanted to play so I put him in the living room and slept on the couch while he played...once I saw he laid down I put him back in the play yard and he slept until 7 this morning. I don't put water in there with him so he doesn't knock it over so usually the last of the water he gets is at 11pm. We wash his bedding nightly in case he did have accidents so it might be when I put the big fuzzy blanket in there that he doesn't get up to wake us up. I should take note when it happens and what bedding is in there. We do have a small bed and working on making different ones...just haven't found one just right yet. Like a mattress store..he has to try them all out |

| He cried and whined for a hour... Took him outside couple more times before just letting him out to play. Figured it would tire him out so we could go back To sleep. First time it's happened but how long do you let them cry? Could have let him in our bed but I think learning his bed is not ours is the point I tried to make. But he won the battle. |

YT 500 Club Member | Seriously these babies need a constant routine. Same bed time, same time potty outside at night, back to bed, same wake up time in morning and immediately outside for potty. My boy as a young pup slept in his crate. He did cry and I couldn't stand it. I put his crate on my bed. Slept like babies. When I would wake at night I took him outside. We only had to go out one time at night. Back into the crate. He could see me lick my fingers. Back to sleep till about 7:00am. Try not to be so scattered with his sleep time and potty time and no playing at 2:00am Ha! It will get better.
