| Welcoming my new yorkie Dear forum members Hope your all well I'm so glad I found this forum .. And looking forward for your advice I have just added an almost 7 month old baby to the family .. And we are so exited !! We named him Henry Henry was givin up by his perviuse owner because she had to travel abroad to study .. He staid in a pet hotel for 6 weeks now and now we are making arrangements to welcome him to his new home .. My question is Henry is 4 hours drive from where I live I was planning to pick him up and drive back on the same day But a Freind told me that it's not wise as hi will be scared and confused .. And it's better to spend one night together for him to get to know me and feel safe before thanking the 4 hours trip back home .. Is it ok to pick him and drive back instantly ? Or shall I arrange to stay a night at a hotel before we drive back ? I know this seems a silly question but i really want this new pup to be very very happy .. And stress free All the best Dana |

| Four hours travel time isn't too long...Make sure he is comfortable and maybe stop every hour for his relief, water, etc. Keep him close to you--do not let other dogs near him and keep people at a distance as well; you don't want to overwhelm him. I think the trip will actually be a wonderful bonding experience for the two of you. Piper was a couple of years old when I got her, we had about an hour drive home and she stayed tight up next to me the whole time--I think that drive actually helped 'seal the deal' for Pipe! Enjoy your little Henry! |

| I think 4 hours is very doable. I did a 3 hour drive back with my puppy, he did great. Basically he just wanted to sleep and hang out on my lap. He may get a little car sick but might not, depends on how much time he has spent in a car. Congrats!!! We will need pics! |

| Shicks -- Judging by our respective avatars, I think below definitely applies to our two...! You know why Yorkies don't use computers? It's too hard to read the monitor with your head cocked to one side. |

| I agree with Shicks, have someone come with you, have THEM drive back while you hold this new baby. 4 hour drive with a 7 month old pup is very doable with potty & water stops maybe every hour or so. Congratulations on your new baby boy.

| I did the same with Duchess, I have about a 2.5 hour drive to go pick her up but in my case, Duchess hated riding in cars. She was 2 years old when I got her. Almost 3 years later she still hates riding in cars. I went by myself and I wish I would of taking someone with me to help keep her calm. She had so much anxiety the entire drive home. I had to stop several times to calm her down. Even today, she can only tolerate being in a car for about an 30 minutes before her anxiety kicks in. On longer trips, I have to give her sedatives to keep her calm. If you can, try to see if someone will go with you just in case you little one hates riding in cars. It is very stressful for the driver if our little ones are having a hard time. Duchess will pace and she gets so worked up, she starts vomiting. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Four hrs is doable for that age of pup. But I would have a plan b just in case. Meaning a place to stop and rest overnight. When I travel with my dogs I stop every two hours so they can stretch their legs and a little snack. Then we have a lunch n dinner break if I am on a very long trip say ten or. More hours . Good luck with your new pup.

| Personally, I went through this and it was rough.... my fur baby was picked up and endured a four hour drive through traffic... during this time she threw up twice and trembled a lot. You might want to bring someone to hold your pet and make stops along your route. Good luck and congratulations!!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Congrates you must be so excited, it would be a good idea, like mentioned to have someone with you so if Henry is nervous you could hold and cuddle him and have a nice fuzzy blanket, Chloe loves the car, but she is happier if she has her blanket with her, I always have it with me, cause if we visit friends and go places with her she always has some comfy place that she knows is hers. |

| Hello welcome to the forum It's better to stay at hotel in one night and getting to know each other and bring foods and treats, and then if you knew that he's comfortable with you then that's time to take him at your home. |
