Does a yorkie do better with stairs or ramp? I moved my studio where I work to our dining room during potty training phase. ( I work from home thankfully) There is a patio door here and a perfect place for a play yard for Max! It's already fenced on 2 sides so a short fence from the house to the fence would give him a 8 x 12 foot yard of his own. The bigger yard is a pain because he wants to dash under our deck and won't come out. But with this area we need to do stairs or a ramp. We can build the stairs shorter and the stair tread wider to accommodate those short little legs but would a ramp be better? He hates wet grass so a small deck for him would work to keep the dew off the grass when it rains! It would be perfect if I can just tell my son in law how to build it. And does yorkies really dig...like under the fence? Will have to fix that too.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Some yorkies will dig, yes. None of mine do, but some will. I'd probably try stairs first, if it were me, only bc stairs tend to take up less overall room/real estate as compared to a longer ramp.

Oddly, both of my boys are terrified of stairs/steps. If there are steps/stairs/curbs, then I have to pick them both up and carry them. They will both go up the steepest ramp though. My Zeusy had Legg-Calve-Perthes and had his left rear hip joint removed, so he definitely does better on ramps. Percy is literally terrified of steps/stairs -- sitting and shaking terrified. Zeusy has at least tried one and then sat down. He won't try them again.

Ruger never had a ramp. My place is two floors and if he wanted to be with me he'd figure it out. It was fun watching him in the beginning, but now he flies up and down the stairs way faster than me. That said, I live in a place where it snows a lot, so a lot of the stairs in the area are see through grates. I have to carry him up and down when he gets to one of these.

It snows here to for 5 months so not sure which is worse, shoveling a ramp or stairs! One dog refuses to go down the basement stairs and she has short little legs too. That's why I wasn't sure if stairs are good for them. I thought of a small deck then a stair, then a deck and another stair but that's even more to shovel( son in law builds houses so I have a builder in the family) Once it snows here the girls (shiz tzu) will only pee in the snow but since he hates wet grass not sure how he will react to snow. I will have to sew him a parka and snow boots I think!

Our Mia does better with wings. We bought stairs to get on our bed, nope she jumps up and down. She flies to the living room from about the 5th step up. As I've been saying for a year and a half, I thought I was getting a lap dog, I got a gazelle.

I bought a stair for Zoey (5.5 lbs) so she can climb on/off my bed but she hated it and wouldn't use it. Ramp, she got the hang of it within 5 min. Personally, I'd suggest a ramp. It does have the disadvantage of taking up more space but I feel that's well compensated by the fact that it's causes less impact on their joints.

I have a superman/ parkour expert in my house. He skips stairs and ramps and pops and leaps everywhere. No stopping him.
