Unhappy Help... Bridget wont eat!!!!

Hi everyone,
Well I finally had the happy day arrive where I got to bring my baby home (yesterday). I have been following the breeders instructions but so far Bridget is hardley eating at all. I am noticing she is playing hard and not doing much to recharge. I finally became very worried and gave her some peanut butter and karo syrup becasue I would pick her up and she wouldnt move. Afterwards she is doing much better (like within minutes) but I am not sure what else I can do to make sure she stays ok. I currently have her on IAMS puppy food, what she was on while weaning and I was told to soften it in water. I have foowoed all instructions to a t and she still does not want to eat. Are there other foods out there she would like better than I can switch her to? Is there a way to make sure she wont have a problem with the hypoglycima? Please help, I dont have a pet er that is accesible right now, but I do have an appointment first thing in the morning.

Thanks
Brandi & Bridget

I'm fairly new to this and I'm sure there will be others that can answer this better but one suggestion is to have some Nutrical on hand. It is a high calorie dietary supplement. My breeder suggested giving it a few times a day until he was settled and eating well. I would also give it to him before anything stressful like a trip to the vet. Best of luck with your new little one.

DO NOT switch foods all at once. If you want to switch foods, you have to introduce the new food slowly. There was a thread about how to do this recently. You can probably locate it through the search function (sorry, I don't know how to attach threads as links).

I bet she'll eat if you hand feed her. I don't know why but Yorkies LOVE to be hand fed.

Nutrical is a good suggestion for low blood sugar. If you can't find it at your pet store (look where they sell ferret food), then you can get it over the internet.

P.S. She's probably just adjusting to her new surroundings.

I have to agree with Lexi's Mom. When I first brought Cordelia home she wouldn't eat out of her bowl. So, I would take a little and put it in my hand. She would eat it like that. Now she is a pig...she will take food in her mouth and carry it to her bed and eat it. She goes back and forth like this. You should also get some Nutrical and have her lick it off your finger.

I don't know what it is about the Iams but my puppy would not eat it either. The vet swiched him to a physcians formula food that was high in calories. I've heard so many good things about Royal Canin that I am going to change him to that now that he is off the canine p/d. Their tummys can be sensitive when they are little so you may want to give 1/2 of the old 1/2 new at first.

Marlee,
ITs not uncommon for your puppy to morn the loss of her litter mates and or mommy for a couple days.
Just like said before.....HAND FEED HAND FEED HAND FEED.
Right now its important she eats.......and where it may be different then what others tell you.......give her some people food.........I have never had a dog refuse thin sliced baked ham or chicken..........I have never really been fond of softening food with water........i give dry and give treat food 3 times a day or more......meaning canned..........I wouldnt be afraid to give her a good canned puppy food...right now its improtant she eats..........bits on your finger/ or she may just eat it right up!
You can put some table sugar in your water too, a tsp or so at all times until this vital time is over (1 weeks or so) just to keep sugar levels up. Until she eats better.
Rub some karo on her tongue or sugar three times a day is an option too, until you get nutrical.
If she is crashing after eating regularly alot then I would want to definitely get her tested later for other things.
This is only meet as a guide, take or leave any info you like.....and if the problem continues see the vet.

Luvdordyyorkies is right. I forgot but I gave my pup babyfood chicken sticks. (I read about it on here) I took a verbal hiding from my vet however. I think breeders know better than the vets sometimes. The most impotant thing is to get your pup to eat.

Obviously you have gotten great advice already and since you already have an appt. tomorrow you're on the right track. The only other thing I can add that the vet told me is maybe to feed her some soft baby food chicken. When I did that with mine, she lapped it right up. You could try mixing it in with the dog food. Your vet can tell you how to gradually change the food if it needs to be. The nutrical is a definate, as a suppliment. Karo is good if she starts acting hypoglocemic. If she starts vomiting or diahhera, you need to get her to the vet ASAP - don't wait til tomorrow if you can, unless it is in the middle of the night and you have no where to take her, like you said, but I would take her as soon as they open. Chances are it is because of her relocation, but with these tiny dogs, you have to be really on top of things. Just give her lots of love and attention and she will adjust and be totally comfortable and I'm sure things will get to be normal for her and everything will be fine and if she just doesn't like the food, I'm sure that can be corrected in no time Enjoy your new baby

Default Won't eat....

As a breeder, I feed a tablespoon of canned Science Diet Puppy formula at 7AM, noon, & 7PM and I offer the dry Science Diet puppy food all day long for a snack. (I have found it is less aromatic... when you use the wee-wee pad form of potty training.) A finicky eater can be mourning the loss of it's "home" as they knew it, but like the other posts told you, be sure to watch for Hypoglycemia. Symptoms: Lethargy, Loss of Appetite, Seizures, Vomiting, Disorientation, Loss of conscientiousness, Trembling (often mistaken as a cold or nervous puppy) Nutra-cal is a wonderful product to have on-hand at all times... My newly weaned pups also love a scrambled egg, or a tablespoon of cottage cheese on their dry food. Be sure to find a vet that is truly familiar with the Yorkshire Terrier when you look for your new baby’s doctor. Preventive heath care is the key to keeping your Yorkshire terrier happy and healthy. They have special needs when it comes to dental cleaning or being put under for surgery. Best of luck. I know you will have many years of love from your new pup.

Default Thank You

Thank you all so much for the advice,

Bridget made it through the night just fine and with the advice seems to be eating a bit more. She still shakes quite a bit but I cannot tell if it is just her being cold or nervous or Low blood sugar, so I now have nutrical on hand to give her right away.
The vet said she looked really good and heathly and said I had pick out a good baby. I kinda laughed and told him it wasnt me that picked her kinda of the other way around.

I hope to get her pics up soon so you all can see her, she is a handful and has a ton of personality. (she loves to terrorize our cat) and she has the cutest little bark.

Once again thanks for all the help, I am glad I have a place like this to help get me through the rough spots.
