| dew claws growing back? If I didn't know any better I would swear her claws were growing back. The knub keeps getting bigger by the week. It would be fantastic if this was true. Any one have this happen? |

| Did the breeder say they removed the dewclaws? I hate dewclaws so it would not be fantastic to me lol.

| What do dew claws do anyway? It's standard procedure to have dew claws removed early on, is it not? |

| Most breeders do it when they are three days old and get their tails docked. I hate dew claws. I grew up with a beagle who got continues infections and in like a week her dew claw could go from nice and trimmed to growing into her pad. Callie got hers stuck on the fence and ripped it off and exposed her nerve and vein. It was so icky.

| There's some debate on what the dew claw is 100% for, but it's often believed to give more traction when running (some dogs' dew claw would reach the ground when running) climbing, or when holding on to things. My little girl has her dew claws and has never had any issues. The same can be said for any dogs we have had growing up. It's not common practice to remove them here (as far as I know) and tail docking is now not allowed also (Thankfully! Nothing better than a waggy tail!). I wish I could give more information on whether a dew claw could grow back or not. Maybe a call to the vet would clear it up for you

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Talk to your vet and explain what you are seeing. Likely you will need to go into the vet for appraisal. If the nub is growing it is I believe not a sign of the nails growing back maybe a sign of infection or other more benign events

| My little girl has her front dew claws. Although her show breeder had her tail docked to a medium length, she purposely left the dew claws. She does performance sports with many of her dogs, and she leaves the dew claws on all her dogs. She hasn't had any problems with her dew claws. I read of the possibility of dew claws coming back, but now attached fully, if they were improperly removed. This is an excellent article about the use of dew claws. http://www.caninesports.com/uploads/...xplanation.pdf

| Dewclaws are actually pretty important- they help the dog to grip especially during tight turns and the muscles and ligaments that are attached to them can cause problems (mostly arthritis later on) if they are clipped. Loose, floppy claws can go- but the ones with bones, those have muscles and tendons too and do actually serve a purpose.

| Both of them are growing back, so no.. it's not that. Vet checked it out and said nothing medically wrong. |

| To answer both of you, i never met the breeder. I met Heather and spoke to breeder on the phone. Chewie uses her paws as hands. She hugs and grips.. searches and generally is very "handsy" with them. I don't think it's a bit gross. Next puppy we get will have her full tail and dew claws. I am of the mind that things need to stay intact, and follow this with any species. Cats, humans, dogs.. pretty much any species. |
