YorkieTalk Newbie! | xray shows no puppies Hi, I had my yorkie to the vet for an xray to confirm if she was pregnant. The xray faintly showed 1 spine and a possible 2 more. He told me to go back in two weeks to have another xray to count the puppies. She had her xray today and it showed no puppies at all. I am very confused. She is showing all of the signs of pregnancy. Her belly isnt getting big but she is getting wider across the back. Her boobs are big and she has enlarged mammary glands. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Thanks in advance for your help |

| She could have re-absorbed her puppies....or she was misdiagnosed as being pregnant in the first place. Usually, I will have an ultrasound done early in the pregnancy, and then an xray when the skeletons are formed, around day 56 of the pregnancy. My vet is very proficient in doing/reading ultrasounds, so she seldom miss counts the number of puppies present. |

| If she is due in that time, you can feel the pups moving inside her belly. Did you ever feel them moving before the X-ray? If you did before and not after the X-ray, she might have had a miscarriage somewhere in the house at night and you didn't notice it. |

| If it were me, I would have her re-rayed....a good, clear, well developed, easily read xray..... just to be certain there were no puppies present, or to be sure there were no retained dead puppies. If she is "clean" with no doubt, then she is having a false pregnancy, which they sometimes will do if they loose a litter before they are delivered....the pups are reabsorbed, but hormones remain elevated and momma can exhibit symptoms of a pregnancy. If she does indeed have retained dead puppies, you need to have the vet help her expell those dead babies....if early in pregnancy, they will ofter reabsorbe the dead fetuses, but if the dead babies are close to delivery, I would never leave those in momma .....set up for a dangerous deadly infection. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thanks for the advice and information. I will wait another little while before I consider more X-rays. It's already been two X-rays in two weeks now so I don't want to expose her more if I don't need to. But I will wait and see. I may decide to get a second opinion at a different vet. |
