| Questions about calcium during pregnancy and delivery Hello, My Olivia is pregnant and due on July 10th. This is my first time having a yorkie litter and I am a bit nervous. I had a litter of golden retrievers years ago but they are so different from yorkies. Thankfully I have a wonderful breeder friend who has been walking me through the pregnancy so far. Olivia is getting a prenantal vitamin daily and she is eating nutrisource puppy food which is what I feed my puppies. I also give her ground turkey burger and veggies with her dry food at night. She gets healthy treats like fruit or cheese and she seems to be doing fine. She is just so big and still has two weeks to go. The Vet saw at least 4 puppies when she had her ultrasound. My friend always gives calcium to her pregnant females about a week before they are due. She also gives them a dose in between delivering each pup. She then gives her females bone health in their food while they are nursing. I have everything so I can do this but my Vet didn't feel it was neccessary. What are your thoughts? I have another question. If Olivia has a large litter and one or two are little and are having trouble should I supplement feed them. My cat had 9 kittens with her first litter and I supplemented them with kitten formula and all lived and were very healthy. I probably wouldn't have to do this with all of her puppies but thought if there were one or two that are really tiny and not thriving, I should with them. Thank you in advance for your help!! Anne |

| Hi Anniemm I'm so glad you are working with a vet and an experienced mentor, what an exciting time coming up! With goats or cows because they have been bred for high milk production they are more likely to experience what is commonly called milk fever when they suddenly have a great need for higher calcium and the calcium levels in their blood drop drastically due to their production. Although this is pretty typical in a dairy specific animal and less common in other animals, it is definitely still an issue that can occur in dog breeds. Did your vet feel that it would be unnaceptable or harmful for some reason? Because if he wasn't against it but just didn't feel it was necessary than I would want to err on the side of caution and go with the calcium myself. If he is concerned however that h high levels of calcium in addition to her current diet and supplements would put her at risk for calcium deposits in her kidneys or something like that, then I would heed the Dr's orders for sure. My background is in farm animals though so perhaps an educated breeder will chime in with their experience as well best of luck with the upcoming babies!

| He wasn't against it. He just didn't think it was neccessary but he hasn't had a lot of experience with yorkies. Thank you for the response! |
