| Walking Yorkie Good Morning All, I need your help. I walk my little Cody in the morning. First he has to mark his territory and then he makes Poo ... This is the problem I'm having with him. So we will go on our daily walk. Cody my little teacup think he is the Pack leader. He stop and go. Stop and go which is very annoying. He wants to walk in a different direction from where I'm taking him. He will have like a tantrum as to say if I can't go that way, well it's gonna take us longer to go your way. That's where the stop and go come in. Today I was tired and irraitated so I scooped him up and told him we're going back in the house since you don't want to walk. Now I'm walking with him in my arms, he's trying to get down I'm not allowing it. Help want can I do to avoid the stop and go??? |

| Try having a read through the late Dr Sophia Lin's teachings... https://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/w...make-it-clear/ This is training how to walk loose leash, which will help your dog to focus on you rather than stop and go. This one has some good instructions for leash training too... Leash training your dog - Dogtime BUT. If your dog has started to mark...it's not going to go away. You'll have to accept it sooner or later - it's a dog's nature thing.

| This so reminds me of my Brandi (RIP). It would take 10 minutes just to walk 10 feet. She had to stop and smell every blade of grass and when she got tired of walking, she would come to a complete stop. No amount of prodding could get her to walk again. I would have to pick her, walk a few feet and put her back down to get her to walk again. And if we were on our way home and she wasn't ready to go back in the house she would come to a complete stop.....which was kind of embarassing when she would do it in front of a group of people because I didn't want people to think I was abusing her . Fortunately they would just laugh.....since she was a rescue that came from a horrible situation, I never did bother to correct her behavior. I figured since she had such a horrible start in life that this would be the one area in her life that she controls....so I basically let her set the tone for our walks. For the most part she was a good dog with very little behavior problems except for our walks. |

| I am a great believer in exercise for humans and animals. My little girl was a terror until we started going on walks twice a day. She is also one who likes to sniff out every place that another dog, squirrel, or any other animal has been. I usually let her sniff then give her a little tug to get her going again. Your dog may be finding the scent of something he wants to go after. Their minds are on the scent and not the walk. That is why their noses are on the ground most of the time. Just keep in mind that he has a genetic mindset to sniff out, hunt, and kill rodents. He is on a mission and the scent left by other animals gets his instincts hopping. It might help you to learn some basic obedience training from someone that has experience with terriers. Make sure you are using a good secure harness that gives you control over your dog without inflicting any pain or harmful pressure. Terriers are stubborn creatures. That is part of what makes them what they are and why people love them. When you learn how to work with that stubborn tendency and not against it you get your breakthrough. They just have an agenda different than ours! |

| Piper's favorite thing in the world is going for walks. Since she is alone all night while I work and because she doesn't ask for much, I let her set the pace (quick) and reel out/in homemade 25' leash as we go. Piper, too, puts her little beak into overdrive and tomboy that she is, 'marks' as well. When she takes too much time investigating, I simply keep walking and when necessary pull on leash. Now that we're into the heat of summer, Piper will often find lush, damp grass and will drop to her belly, sometimes just lies still, other times she'll do the roll-thang. I try to give her whatever time is reasonable to do her antics or we'll stop while she watches something that has caught her eye. She is very good about ignoring barking, running dogs as we walk by and she's happy with whatever route I choose. I don't mind her terrier-trotting ahead as it's her happy time to be out and about...! |

| Away from home, Piper must always be watched and leashed as she is quick as lightning, totally oblivious of everything around her when focused and nothing but nothing will make her come when called. But I chose to adapt and accept her little Piper foibles and coming to know her as I do, I learned not to take her behaviors personally...Piper has such inherent goodness and sweetness; she is so genuine and honest and she's laugh-out-loud funny everyday; and of course, she has those oh-so-clever Yorkie smarts! I never stood a chance! Sooo I give a little, she takes whatever she can get and we have found balance. For me, Piper is absolutely perfect and I love her with complete abandon, total joy and beyond what words can express. |

| Omg Beowulf does this too! What's frustrating is when I try to tug him a little to come he will stand still and sometimes pull LOL So Stubborn! I have to say come on lets go come on a few times for him to listen. Yesterday I took him to the mall and it was terrible. He wanted to stop and mark, go different directions then I was going, chase the pigeons LOL. Never again. He's staying in his carrier next time. I've actually thought about bringing treats with me to encourage him when he does listen but I always forget

| When out and about, Piper has no interest in any treat--she's too busy and distracted checking out the scene! If she doesn't want to be motivated, ain't nothin' gonna motivate her...this was an interesting revelation that I, personally, had never experienced with previous pets (even my two felines had something that would work). I must say, I hold a grudging respect for Piper's iron will. |
